This is a great pedal for mid to late 70s Rush tone . Does the Bastille day and 2112 tones amazingly well
Does the All The World's A Stage live album guitar sound as well . Lifeson was using an MXR Distortion Plus in the 70s but I find the Distortion 3 sounds more Rush like. I think he was using the Distortion Plus as a solos boost exclusively
It sounds like a flavor pedal to me personally. Its enough tight but i dont think it can handle more modern metal playing, all around i agree it has something special to it.

I have one and still using it for almost 10 years. Still a solid distortion pedal. I’m playing pop punk music, it fits with the powerchord stuff. Such an excellent pedal

I love the Modified Badass OD and the Distortion+
The latter is not well-regarded these days but it's great for boosting. Kind of a "dirty boost"
The Distortion 3 is a real sleeper. It's definitely more of an OD. Props to MXR for keeping the prices reasonable on these pedals.
I have a lot of so called boutique pedals and overdrives but I also have this MXR Dist III and it is amazing! But I seldom see people saying anything good about it.
