Hear what Tom Araya ACTUALLY does on bass in the mix | Slayer reaction

Slayer vocalist Tom Araya is one of the most recognisable vocalists in Thrash Metal. But what about Tom as a bass player? Especially on the early Slayer albums, where one might only guess what he sounds like. So in this video let’s take a look at some of the isolated bass parts by Tom Araya from the early Slayer albums, and then discuss a little something about those.

We will take a look at such songs as:
Slayer – Angel of Death
Slayer – War Ansemble
Slayer – South of Heaven
Slayer – Seasons in the Abyss
Slayer – Raining Blood
Slayer – Black Magic

00:00 – Intro
00:25 – Let’s hear it
02:38 – Tom Araya basses
03:45 – Tom or Kerry?

  • Kerry said it was done due to time restrictions and that Tom does play the bass well. So Tom still learned the bass parts and plays them live while he does vocals. I can’t sing and play at the same time. Not very well anyway. I’m sure the strategy was to have Tom focus on the vocals more while in the studio

  • Seen him live many many times and he is an incredible bass player, if he can do it live night after night faster than the original recordings then I'm pretty sure he can do it in the studio.

  • I'd like to hear Tom's baselines on the following songs: Captor Of Sin, Haunting The Chapel, Praise Of Death, Necrophilia, Crypts Of Eternity and Kiill Again

  • Seeing Tom Araya with his big black hair spinning with a bass and screaming about insane topics influenced me more than his playing. I thought he was a guitar player at first. Until I knew what bass was.

  • so what? what do you expect him to do? he didn’t overplay, he gave the tune all it needed.

  • Why would you even make a video about his bass playing ? one of the absolute greatest legends of thrash metal at the forefront of a band that is un parallel to any other in history I don’t think it really matters if Tom even sucks on bass which he does not, he is playing exactly what he needs to play while screaming bloody murder to match some of thrash metals absolute greatest riffs with lyrics from hell unrivalled by any other band and singer on the planet one of the greatest bands of all time …I stopped watching 10 seconds in no point slayer fucking rules Tom kicks fucking ass his laid-back calm demeanour while fronting. The heaviest of all time says it all FUCKING SLAYER

  • Wait a minute,
    I heard that's Kerry King.
Hard to argue with ticket sales.
Slayer is a Legend. Whether you like them or not…

  • If Kerry is to be believed, it’s him on the album playing. Tom only did vocal tracks

  • Is he that great??? Yes!! Araya second lemmy is the first…i mean…playing bass in a thrash metal band and sing at d same time? They play bass the way thrash metal bassist would do or play…????

  • Its straight up thrash, it doesnt need to be overly complex. Fast, angry and forming the backbone of the rhythm section is what it did, and what i think was needed

  • Tom openly admits hes a shit bass player and doesnt play on yhe actual album. Kerry writes then does his bass lines in studio.

  • We always knew Tom's basslines were extremely minimal, it serves the music better. Listen to Steve Harris' bass line matching the guitar exactly on "Phantom of the Opera" and it sounds almost comical. If Tom played like that on Angel of Death's bridge, it would ruin the groove.

  • While Tom isn't exactly Cliff Burton or Steve Harris, I do appreciate him as a player, that and it's impressive he can play right handed despite being a lefty.

  • Tom is no Getty Lee but does excellent bass lines that fit perfectly for slayer. He is the singer too, which is not a easy feat!

  • So Tom isn’t the best bass player but Lars isn’t the best drummer .. doesn’t change the fact that he’s the bass player for the biggest thrash band ever

  • I've seen Slayer a few times in concert… twice in the 80s and once in the 90s. In all cases, I was pretty close to the stage. Tom was not only hard to hear, but watching his fingers it was hard making out what he was actually doing much of the time.

  • Its hard to say How good he is at bass. Truth is his bass lines are simplistic. But they are all on time and enhance the music he is playing with.. In that respect id say he is a respectable bass player. That doesnt mean he cant rock the hell out of a bass in a solo or whatever. Also he was lead vocalist. Doing both at the same time and doing both perfectly is impressive all by itself. Even if the bass lines werent of the highest quality his singing is..

  • Crypts of eternity but they have come out and said in interviews before they keep the bass lines simple because he’s singing and was the showman before the surgery. They’ve never hid the bass lines aren’t some complex composer.

  • The bass parts at the beginning of the song Seasons in the Abyss are really nice. There's a clean section with just a little chorus on it. Wonderful.
