Flea used Modulus Funk with ODB-3 overdrive, tons of compression and low string action.
Not enough dry signal in the tone. Flea's still has plenty of definition. Y'all's recreation is the sonic equivalent of wearing a wool sweater in 90° heat with 100% humidity: too wet and fuzzy.
