MARTIN D-28 and D-18 HEAD TO HEAD

DROP A COMMENT: Which Martin Guitar is BEST?

FROM MARTIN:

Martin D-18:
Understated looks, timeless tone. The warm tone of mahogany and spruce couple with resonant scalloped bracing under the hood for a sound that’s honest, authoritative, and clear. Vintage details include open-geared tuners and classic 18-style appointments pair with a modern, low profile neck for an old-soul sound. Available in full gloss, full satin with an aging toner top, or full satin with an amberburst top.

Martin D-28:
The Martin D-28 has been the quintessential workhorse of music legends like Hank Williams, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and so many more. It’s no surprise because the D-28 is crafted with East Indian rosewood, which is very resonant and offers deep bass and rich overtones. It is a well-balanced guitar for all playing styles. It also combines vintage appointments like open gear tuners, an aged toner top, antique white accents, and a faux tortoise pickguard with a modern neck profile for a fast, comfortable playing experience. Previously available only in full gloss, Martin has now added two new finish options to this longtime staple so future music legends like you can rock the one that suits your personal style and budget. You can now opt for a full satin-finished body (top, back, and sides) with your choice of an aging-toner top or an amberburst top. Which one will you choose?

  • I think the 28 has a punchy rhythm but that 18 is just so well balanced and cuts thru so bright yet, ballsy! Own an hd28, 2017 love it. Just gave it to my son, cause dad got a stellar 72 d18. My forever guitar!

  • I have a 2008 Martin D-28 Marquis (Adirondack Top over EIRW), 2 5/16" string width at the saddle & 1 1/4" nut width. My son has a 2001 D-18 GE (Adirondack Top over mahogany) with same exact specs and neck feel. LOVE the necks on both guitars. He does alot of flatpicking and strumming. I mostly finger pick. He is a MUCH better player. He prefers the tone on his D-18, I prefer my Marquis. Both are cannons with the great Martin bass whump.

  • They are both great guitars so it is really personal preference on which tone you like the best! I prefer the d28 because i like the brighter tone, but i would be very happy with a d18 too!

  • Never played a D18, but I've played a J45 and really liked it. Also have a Gallagher G-50 12, which is mahogany and I really love it's hum back into your body.. Just bought a HD28 and have had a rosewood OM-21 for decades. The 28 is a boomer and I really, really love it. But I think it's kind of apples and oranges, mahogany v. rosewood. If I was left to one, it'd depend on what I was doing with it. Playing out with others, I'd take the 28. It's loud and holds together when you hit it hard. Playing on the porch at home, I like the mahogany because it does hum mellow into your chest more so than rosewood.

  • When doing a sound comparison in future please play the same things side by side on each instrument. Harder to tell difference when you play different riffs/strums on each. At the end you can play something different on each but it really looses what it supposed to be which is a comparison

  • D18 cuts through a bit more as a solo instrument though, think the D28 sounds slightly better. Deeper more resonant. It's tough.

  • Been playing for 50 years. My 2 cents? You’ll know the guitar is your soulmate when you pick it up and play. Give it 10 minutes. You will know.,

  • First 11 seconds confirmed my D-18 choice – prefer the fuller sound – the D-28 just lost its sound when the switch came. Could see it in a band setting with the scoop but for me soloing for a cat and kids the D-18 fits.

  • I’ve played both multiple times. The D-18 is much more mid focused, which sounds great recorded and cuts through the mix really well. The D-28 has more tonal frequency in the low and high end. It sounds fuller in person, and works better to sing with. After watching all these comparison videos, I was convinced that I’d buy the D-18, but after playing them side by side in person, chose the D-28. My only regret is that I didn’t understand what the HD-28 was, and I might have bought that one instead. But overall I’m very happy with my decision.
