Boost Pedal Placement – where do they go?
Boost Pedals… where should you place them? Do they go before or after overdrive or distortion? How do they differ? What is the difference in running them before overdrive and distortion or after? How does it affect guitar tone?
Today I’ll answer these questions and more. Comment with which boost pedals YOU like, and where YOU like to put them!

Mostly boost before to increase distortion, and after for solo boost. The “after” version also offers a solo boost in clean tones too.
My boost pedals are always in front of drive, and they are the Notaklon the CS3 a 7 band EQ and a Dynacomp
Out of interest, have you come across a Dano Wasabi OD? It has a Boost option. I havent seen mine for a couple of years, now. I'd better search for that, soon. Great Pedal.
they supposed to go on the floor
Bruh – you gotta turn the pedals on and off while your playing so we can the the immediate difference. ( strum – turn on turn off)_ otherwise after you talk and then just start with it all on- nobody can really hear any difference
What I like to do with my Ratsbane is set it's distortion low to a nice, chewy overdrive. Then, when I want to push it into distortion, I kick on my Tumnus which is set very clean. If I could special order my own custom Wampler combo pedal, that's exactly what it would be. ????
ANYWHERE and EVERYWHERE.
… Behringer is helpful.
Problem is need at least 1 more cable & a PSU connection or battery per pedal!
What pedal matches well with the Wampler Mosfett?
Boost before drives and after distortion
Partially thanks to you and your channel (and to this specific video), today I built my first pedal from a kit. It's a clone of the Zvex SHO form musikding and, amazingly to me, it works! I placed it in front of my OD-3 (at least for now). Thanks a lot for your videos! Next stop, a couple of fuzzes, of course, and after that it's time to actually try to understand what I'm doing haha ????
I use a TC Spark as an always-on clean boost to colour my tone a bit and even out my clean and dirty levels a bit. For dirt, I currently use a Green Russian Big Muff, Rat 2, OD Glove, primarily, but also sometimes a Kraken or a cheapo Joyo California (for when I want In Utero-ish distortion).
Fender Jaguar —> Wampler Plexi mini —> Supro boost —> Traynor YGL-3
Very nice sounding yet noisy raunchy dirt
My favorite part of this video is your cat. All your videos are great Brian.
I use a clean boost in effect loop. To give that volume boost for Solo’s.
I always put Tuminus first into front of amp followed by Tube screamer, Transparent Boost, EQ pedal, Tuner, Wah into guitar
Hey thanks once again. Currently I’m using a spark mini into a tumnus mini (almost always on) into a nobels mini and another spark mini at the end of my chain just for volume purposes.
My amp is set somewhat clean and Usually the tumnus is always on unless I’m playing a fast disco type of rhythm. if I want a little more grit I clip and add the first boost. For more dirt I add the nobles.
So spark-tumnus-nobels mini and another spark at the end.
Any thoughts or advice always welcome and thanks for your amazing instruction videos.
Great demo and subject. Thank you. ❤ Love to use a boost to add just that extra for solos or special parts to whatever clean or dirty tone you have as a base.
1st impression is boost into distortion sounds a bit cloudy or with a fog sort of saying. Boost after distortion is much better because there is no alternation of the distortion drive pedal
With my cheap gear I have 2 Daphon ODs together – 1st is cleaner but with slight level boost into 2nd as regular OD ( this one has a mod of some kind!) and at end of chain an MXR micro amp which only has a level knob for louder. There's a Dist after 2nd Daphon in there as well. BTW it's wicked live!
Can a pedal like the ocd act as a boost?
Tumnus into Moxie ❤
Killer. I’m wrestling with this on my current build
I put my dB+ as the first thing in my pedalboard. My reasoning is I usually set around 8-9 oclock as a solo boost so it’s not boosting my signal all that much so only a little distortion increase but I can crank it up higher and still get the extra gain. The added gain as a solo boost is welcome, and added gain if I increase the volume is louder too
Question for you guys. How do you usually set the volume and EQ on your boost and the EQ on your amp when using distortion? Do you use the same settings when you're going through the FX loop as apposed to the front of the amp? Thanks.
I like my Tumnus by itself. You can get an on the edge of breakup sound that fits a million songs.
Moral of the story, boost before dirt/distortion
Awesome content Brian thanks so much, cats rule!
Ya ive got to get some of there wamplers….they look well made…sound awesome.
I recently bought a Tumnus and use it after my standard overdrive and distortion pedals. Blues, hard rock, "almost metal" all shine with the addition. I absolutely love it.
My solution: put one before and after.
I like to use a Keely compressor with it acting as an overdrive in front of a TS9. Great video. To me, hearing the DB boost with the overdrive sounds pretty good. Great review!!!
Thanks Brian for the video

I currently use an OCD as a boost pedal into a Rat on my bass rig. I like the way it colors the sound.
