Martin on the D18: “Understated looks, timeless tone. The warm tone of mahogany and authentic Sitka spruce couple with resonant scalloped bracing under the hood for a sound that’s honest, authoritative, and clear. Vintage details like open-geared tuners and classic 18-style appointments pair with a modern, low profile neck for an old-soul sound in a brand-new body.”

More information on the D28 can be found here: https://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/D-28.html?cgid=guitars

Martin on the D28: “After nearly a century at the helm, and as the quintessential workhorse of music legends like Hank Williams, The Beatles, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, and so many more, Martin’s legendary D-28 has been lovingly and artfully enhanced.”

  • Ehh, I think the real dif is in the picking. Obviously mahogany is a better strummer, but it depends if you're picking or not, and what tone you're going for when you're doing it. The hog is more versatile in the dred platform, can strum and pick.

  • Not gonna pretend there's no differences between the 2, but if you have either of these and can't get the sound you need from it then buying the other one won't solve your problem. If you need a dreadnought and you acquire a good d18 or d28 then you have the guitar you need.

  • Played both today at a guitar store. D28 the clear winner. Just had more depth and nuance. Not even close.

That said if money were no option I’d have a D35.

  • What is the point in muting the strings when you strum…..we can't hear the tone of the guitar

  • I really like the look of the 28 with the neck volute and the rosewood, but I like the sound of the 18 more and I think the binding looks better.

  • I have a D 18 and a 000-28 EC and in my option the D 18 sounds much better….as for the D 28 it PPEARS TO TAKE MORE STRENGTh TO PLAY TO GET IT RING OUT……I'd go for the D 18 which is half price….even if you like the D 28 what % are you getting maybe 10 % max….is it worth the price' capitols unintentional….I am not a reporter for the National Enquirer :).

  • D28 has much more harmonic content. The d18 doesnt sound much different than my 1997 Taylor 510

  • I dropped off my D18 to have it looked at for some fret buzzing I can't seem to kill. I was looking at the D28's and the prices. Yikes! That old "It's more, so it's better I want it." vibe was setting in. My son literally walked me out because he knows I'm gonna do it. I watched this video. I could spend the rest of what's left of my life making my D18 sing. I'm sticking to it.

  • Kind of silly video. You could just easily get two D18s and or 2 D-28s to compare. No two guitars sound the same and sometimes the difference between so called identical models is vastly different.

  • D28 sounds spot on for Heart of Gold, which is what Neil Young played. The D28 is a better guitar for singing over as its less crisp and more muted.
D18 is a purer, sharper sound.
Both are amazing guitars and the sound is unmatched.
