At just 20 years old, Anthony Jackson walked into a session with Gamble and Huff and laid down a bass line so good it earned him a songwriting credit and a place in music history. For the Love of Money didn’t just become a hit—it set a new standard for groove, tone, and creativity. In this video, Scott and Ian dive into what makes Anthony’s playing so iconic and why this bass line still turns heads decades later.

  • Playing guitar in the studios around NYC I was lucky enough to play on a few sessions with Anthony. I recall he used to bring an MXR studio effects rig similar to the 500 series modules but back then they were proprietary to MXR. He’d have a phaser and a flanger in there. By the time I worked with him he was playing a 6 string but did often use a pick. One other thing. I believe he studied with Dennis Sandole a guitar teacher who also taught Pat Martino and John Coltrane.

  • I know it wasn't their list. But, regardless of musical merit, is it okay to reference Michael Jackson records these days ?

  • All of you musicians, this is not just a channel about the bass playing, these two guys deliver an entire universe of musicianship. I play the piano and I am loving it absolutely.

  • The one song I would like to see you break down is Fire by Ren. It takes until the first chorus for the bass to really kick in, but once it does it's off to the races.

  • Great story. You can actually hear the fader pull back before the band comes in. Almost dry.
The phaser was up on the snare and the hat. In and out throughout the song. I love Anthony’s lead in lick before vs 1.

  • You guys should try and get JT Cure (Chris Stapleton) on for an interview. Loves his vintage gear. And check out his cool bass line in Think I'm In Love With You.

  • Anthony is a bass legend.

How about you do a breakdown on galactic love by action bronson? I know it's a sample from a jazz track. But it's epic!!

  • The Electric Bass G.O.A.T Anthony Jackson ✍????????????????????????

Ian, you need to get the story about that Phaser and how AJ literally made his own after buying it from a Guitar shop. The story is in BP Magazine. I have a whole folder of his interviews and articles in BP magazine.

  • You guys are the very best at history, technical, and playing. Perfection. I’m a bassist and have worked so many genres (theatre, new wave, funk, and more) so I appreciate you.

  • Hello guys. I do have to put you down on what I experienced about Sir Anthony Jackson's sound. I'm from "PHILLY". When I was growing up, …A. Jackson used to come to "PHILLY" and play at the studio. My sister used to date a fella who worked there. A guitarist by the name of "Calvin Harris", Dexter Wansel, Phyllis Hyman just to name a few would be in the recording studio as well. We used to call Sir Anthony Jackson,…"BIG TONY" back in the day. Now, from what I personally remember. Sir Anthony Jackson used to plug his bass into a,…are you ready for this fellas? He would use a GUITAR MXR PHASE SHIFTER P90,…to get that tone. I'm not kidding. The Sounds of PHILADELPHIA!". Hope this helps you guys out. My name is "11Coopbass" on YouTube. Look a little deeper on his tone. You'll see that I'm telling the truth. ????????

  • Couple of things, the pre-delay at around 100ms gives a sort of slapback effect, as said before a plate reverb is similar to a spring reverb, instead of energizing a spring with a electric motor similar to a speaker’s voice and picking it up with a transducer analogous to a microphone you use a large metal plate approximately 3’ by 6’ and held under tension with springs attached to a metal frame, room reverb often called chamber reverb is a large empty room or chamber with a speaker at one end and a microphone at another end. Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘The Boxer’ used a elevator shaft for the classic huge reverb heard in that song, apparently they adjusted the length of the reverb tail by running the elevator up until they found the appropriate sound they were looking for. As an old geezer I knew this years ago before the internet was even invented! I remember working with Red Red Meat and their bass player Glynis Johnson referred to the ‘internet’ as the wonder buster! Most ironically I needed that ‘wonder buster’ to get her name!
