One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that scales are just tools—they aren’t automatically musical. In this lesson, I’ll show you how to stop thinking of scales as just patterns and start using them to make real music. It’s all about focusing on phrasing, dynamics, and expression, rather than just running up and down scales. So, grab your guitar, and let’s unlock the secret to turning scales into musical gold. Trust me, once you learn this, your playing will never be the same!

  • Wow. Let me say that again. Wow. I’ve been watching guitar lesson videos on YouTube for many, many years but this has got to be THE BEST instructional video I think I have ever seen. I’m a subscriber but headed to the website now to become a member. Wow.

  • Truly excellent as an alternative and much better way of looking at how to start extending and experimenting within an initially very limited range.
What grabbed my interest were the silences between notes. As a longtime fan of Peter Green's early music, I could see how this style of learning is likely to lead you towards thought-out riffs and solos where unnecessary speed is exchanged for considered expression. Speed can come later (if that's your thing) or you can find your own way forward with pauses and silences as natural elements of melodic expression.
    Great job. Bell rung.

  • You are making the A minor pentatonic scale sound much more complicated than it is. If you know the scales, feeling and playing style accounts for the rest. ????????????

  • Wow . Now take the minor and major scales plus all the modes . Then do the exact same thing and split it into 3 boxes and make note of all the roots …. Ive just learned about 5 years worth of playing and lessons in this video

  • Great video. Limiting yourself to a tiny chunk of the scale and vibing on that for a while is great advice. When I practice scales one note after the other, that's how I'm going to naturally use them when improvising. But if I practice it in small chunks like this, working on rhythm and phrasing ideas, I'll be more musical when improvising.

  • Imagine taking out a perfect beautiful Gibson Les Paul Custom to showcase the pentatonic patterns lol

  • This is really helpful to make sense of the penthtonics as the rules will apply to all tonescales. Thanks a lot. Rock on????

  • something I learned since I start playing guitar , just let it flow and you'll find your way , the more you listen , the more you will be able to play ! if u become knowing how to play any musical melody , that's cool

  • I discovered those boxes from know some licks from hearing others play. I realized it but you out ut together for me what I realized. Thats pretty neat

  • Thank you so much, this is exactly what I've not been able to understand every time I've tried to learn guitar, it's like this really important step and the reasoning was just skipped over by my guitar teachers over the years, new subscriber video liked, have a great day!!

  • The "walking it up and down" part is actually very useful when you're trying to memorize a scale pattern. As a matter of fact it's the very best way to commit a scale pattern to memory.

  • Music is about rhythm and not about scales. Scales are not highly relevant. The video has the wrong idea and only results in clinical guitar playing. If you can compose a unique rhythm then you can play the same scales over that rhythm and the final product will sound completely different.

  • If I had this video 20 years ago when I first attempted playing a guitar, and since I couldn't comprehend scales and how they operate, I wouldn't have quit…:( But I'm starting again shortly, and I'm quite excited! Wish me luck, everyone! 🙂

  • I watched this video a year and a half ago. Since then, I have been playing guitar so much better. I just wanted to say thank you. It is almost like a map that pointed to a direction that you needed to get to !

  • You just successfully taught me my first scale because I’ve been watching a lot of of people with their fingers moved so fast. I can’t tell what they’re doing.

  • If it took you 10 years to figure out what is a beginners concept then well…………..& don't get me started on "The Scale in itself is not musical"…………….

  • This bit of tid just made playing lead make more sense than anything I've been shown in the past 20+years of playing. I'm self taught and play by ear/feel, and trying to play lead forces me to think about what I'm doing… but I can't think and play for some reason. It doesn't feel right. I overthink it and get overwhelmed by trying to pick what notes to play when. I feel like this was the exact information that I needed in order to sort things out. I've always said that I know there's one stupid little thing that I am missing that will unlock the fretboard for me to understand how to play lead…. AND I AM 100% SURE THAT THIS IS IT. I'M BEYOND GRATEFUL. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
