To anyone who plays Bass I would highly recommend obtaining a copy of The Double Bass by Patrick Suskind, a very informative short story on the Bass, and on the power of the Bass, although about the role of the Bass in Classical music it has much that can be transposed to other genres.
I'm not a musician but want to learn. And I'm going to start with thoroughbass, like in Baroque times.
It's the little things like this that make great music. It doesn't hurt to play, for example, a 3rd instead of the root every once in a awhile. You can find all kinds of great harmonies from experimentation or even mistakes. AC/DCs bassist did stuff like that sometimes (see the main riff to Back in Black for a good example).

When im rocking the 6 string and the Bass take a solo I like to switch my guitar to clean turn down the volume and then walk up to him on stage and give each other that serious face

Funny enough because George disliked Paul's playing on this one. Not because it was bad but because he wanted to keep his song SIMPLE, and yet the final bassline is still intricate enough. Can't imagine how complicated it originally was
