  • I love the Gretsch! I love the metal sound, and it sounds like early blues to me. Besides, I have a 1941 Gretsch Synchromatic, which is the sweetest sounding jazz guitar, and I am totally sold on Gretsch! I a going to buy that Gretsch Honeydipper and start playing slide Blues guitar!

  • It's the gold tone for me, such a depth to the sound while still distinctly a resonator on the higher end.

  • Just a late beginner here, but I've dipped my toe in the resonator waters for the first time–didn't spend a lot, but found a steel Johnson tri-cone to play around with, and I am now wanting to see about playing a little slide guitar on it. This is a great head-to-head comparison, and I find myself preferring the Gold Tone sound here. Might have to find a wood-body one instead! Question: what kind of slide are you playing with here? Finding the right one seems important, but perhaps experienced slide players can play with whatever is at hand. Like the way this one looks, though, and it seems like a comfortable design. Thanks for the comparison!

  • John, I first saw you right after buying the Gold Tone. I have yet to play one, but I know of a shop about 25 miles away which usually has them. My vision is too poor to drive. I did pick up a Honey Dipper today and nearly bought it.
This is a very helpful video. I like them both!
As it's been 3 years, do you have new thoughts on other resonators? I have Mule dreams but not enough money.

  • I own the exact gold tone you have….have played both….the build quality and gold tone sound, fit and finish and playability took me over the edge for it. Looking at the gold tone never gets old. I would like to have heard your opinion on the playability of both. Great vid…thx.
