  • Hey John! I had tried the Blue Cat after your first video on it after months of dropping amp sims for The Boss Katana, struggled a bit at first because of the noise, even despite using a Noise Gate in the DAW (ReaGate), but noticed that it was better if I used the direct input on the Behringer interface (same one you now have) instead of routing it through a DI box and mic output jack into the left input (which is a mic pre-amp), so the gain level that went in was lower and therefore the noise was manageable on the Clean settings of the Blue Cat. Still can't get a high gain distorted sound that I like without tons of volume and added noise (again despite the ReaGate, since once the threshold of the noisegate is surpassed by the signal volume I hear not just the guitar tone but an overlay of hiss and noise that remains there). So yeah, I like the clean presets on the Blue Cat and even made one of my own, but I've noticed it's very different to the clean sound I get from my Strat neck PU on the Katana, which I presume must be modelled more after the "Fender" clean tone, and is more chimey/glassy even harplike; while the Blue Cat is more twangy and without that sweetness. Still a good option for some variety. I think is best to use with some pedal simulation in front of it to get drive/distortion rather than go to a dirty amp setting, in my case atleast, since I can't deal with the amount of extra hiss that comes through on top. Cheers!
P.S.: I still prefer the Katana though ????

  • Cant say I cared much for any of them but then, that Plexi tone, is not my tone at all, that said, most entertaining as always John 🙂

  • Great video John! I've been wondering how the three of them would match up. Lo and behold…Robson is two steps ahead of me and comes to the rescue. Well done sir! I liked the sound of the Bias Amp the best with the Blue Cat coming a close second. I was a little disappointed with the Bias FX. If I were a betting man, I would have lost a bundle on that one….lol. Looking forward to Friday with a few beers and a little chinwag. I'll have to catch the replay since I'll be working but I'll be there in spirit. 🙂

  • Well, at the end of the day, it all comes down to personal preference. For the Boston tones/presets that I create, the free amps work out really well (Audiority, etc.). But, I have yet to find a free reverb plugin that isn't overly technical and does what I need it to do. Reverb is very needed for certain eras of Boston and with other bands that I do covers of – especially the 80's-90's rock & metal. I find myself using Amplitube 4, Overloud TH-U, and Guitar Rig 5 Pro, more than anything else I currently own. There are free versions of Amplitube 4 and Guitar Rig. BIAS FX2/AMP2 are OK but not as accurate as I'd like.

  • I guess if you play around with the mid and bass knobs you can get sounds that are more simular. Btw, great vid, thnx

  • I use Bias FX a lot (but on ipad not PC) and I'm a fan… I always think there's a way to get to the sound you want with most of these guitar apps one way or another (read till the end) but Bias FX seems a cut above for me. I know other guitarists won't agree but we all like what we like yadda yada. I don't see any of your comparisons as the best really but all different. Yes, I think I'd choose the Blue Cat "off the peg" here to have a quick jam with, but one size doesn't fit all imho. I'm not debating by the way. I respect everybody's own preferences.
One thing I wanted to mention (the main reason for my post) is you should be able to use the IR you've chosen for the Blue Cat with Bias FX 2 as that's the case on the ipad (I just tried exactly that). I don't have to use the stock cabs in there, I can use other IRs in their place. That would of course have an impact on the sound (as would also choosing any of the stock cabs available in Bias FX 2 that you own). It's worth bearing that in mind if you're looking to get closer to the tone you want in that app.
Now I didn't get the same tone as you by switching in the IR (I used the same amps settings as you had in Bias FX)… But when I used the stock Green 25s cab as you did and shifted the mic position that got me close. The guitar wasn't the same so a direct comparison was impossible. Maybe have a look at that yourself mate.
Cheers for the videos John – always interesting 😉

  • For me the Bias Amp 2 was a better sound – a bit clearer and more dynamic than Blue Cat. I was surprised at the Bias FX. I thought it sounded thin and weak.

  • The amps in Bias Amp and Bias FX are not the same, you cant use the same settings and expect the similar results. What you can do is to look in the "Bias Amp" folder in Bias FX, and you can use the exact same amp in Bias FX that you created/used in Bias AMP. They are ment to be used together. Get your core tone nailed in Bias Amp, and the effects in Bias FX.

  • Interesting that you prefer the Blue Cat Free Amp. I have to agree and that is why I suggested that you download the Blue Cat AXIOM suite because I believe it is the better amp sim by a long way!
I realise that it has enough bells and whistles to last a lifetime but what joy it is to experiment with so many high quality variations. It is not only an amp sim but it has a huge range of "pedals" for you to play with and the added bonus of plugging in IR's to enhance the sound if you so desire.BTW….I have bought Bias Amp and find it satisfactory BUT Axiom is way better. Yes it costs $199 but when you add up what it would cost to replace all of the amps and pedals inside of this package, you are many thousands of $$$'s in front.

  • for free i always tell people to go for Blue cat free (Blue Cat Axiom is really good), as for Amp and FX, I first had Amp and it was nothing but trouble, I reluctantly got FX on offer and it was a lot more stable, like you said there is a lot more to do with FX and I do like to fiddle around a bit, My Bias Amp is an early version so maybe I should update, good video John. BTW hope I'm ok saying, but I prefer your new tone that you are getting, sounds really good.
