Ashthorpe Guitar Review Full Size Thinline Cutaway

Here is my review of the Ashthorpe Full Size Thinline Cutaway guitar.
(Details of guitar on Amazon)
The guitar body is finely crafted from top-quality (A-grade) tonewoods; Spruce on top for its superior resilient and musical qualities, and Basswood (similar to Alder) is used for the back and sides for optimum tonal response and warmth. The underside of the soundboard is X-braced for superb structural integrity. The neck is constructed from marine grade Okoume which is extremely strong and balanced. The body is a full size (41″) cutaway design, meaning the guitar body near the neck is cut back to allow easier access to the upper frets, making for more comfortable play. This guitar is thinline (3″ thick) which combines unparalleled sound with great looks in a lightweight package. An integrated 4-band pickup equalizer with volume control knob gives you full tonal control when plugged into an amp (not included), and features adjustment slide controls for bass, mid-range, treble and presence.

  • I purchased this Ashthorpe acoustic guitar.
It suffered a low fall requiring an extensive repair.
I'm not a luthier, I don't know what I'm doing trying to fix it.
Here is what I have learned about the Ashthorpe acoustic guitar.
Bridge, saddle, string pins, fret board, and machine head bushings are all PLASTIC!
It gets worse, the truss rod is welded so it won't adjust from factory setting.
This may be true for you, look in the sound hole to check your bracing.
My bracing was 1 centimeter to 1 inch off on all points.
Also see if your sound hole is centered, mine is 1 inch off to the left, and ½ inch forward to the neck.
My neck truss rod pocket on the body side was centered but ¾" off to the left at the headstock.
The frets are real, they are most likely copper rather than brass.
Surprisingly, the bottom, bracing, and sides of the body are worth saving.
So to fix this Ashthorpe dumpster fire I'll need:
    Lots O Wood Glue
    Top Plate Bracing
    Top Plate
    Fret Board
    Truss Rod
    Fret Wire
    Neck
    Machine Heads
    Bone Nut
    Bone Saddle
    Bone String Pins
At the heart of this Ashthorpe dumpster fire will be a paint job.
I'll rattle can with the best but if I'm putting in all this work I want better.
I'm right now considering purchasing a name brand acoustic guitar but I don't want another dumpster fire like this.
I know Ashthorpe is not name brand.
I purchased Ashthorpe because I can't justify several hundreds to thousands of dollars for a name brand.
You pay ¾ the cost just for the name on the headstock, ridiculous.
I understand it's a lot of work to build an acoustic guitar so I don't expect a free guitar either.
I expect to get what I paid for.
I knew Ashthorpe had plastic parts.
I planned to replace them with better to end up with a nice off brand.
I was not expecting this nightmare to unfold leaving me in a predicament.
So for all who got this Ashthorpe acoustic guitar, my condolences.

  • I'm considering getting a guitar, and i saw ashthorpe as the first pick. I couldn't find any reviews, but this helps. The one i saw was for fifty something bucks, which is really cheap

  • Since you have had this Ashthorpe guitar for some years now, would you recommend buying it? I really want to get a guitar soon and I have two in mind:

    – Ashthorpe Full-Size Cutaway Thinline Acoustic-Electric Guitar
    – Jameson Guitars Full Size Thinline Acoustic Electric Guitar
I would appreciate your advise on this

  • I just broke my first (silvertone) acoustic guitar and i was so sad. I see these ashthorpe acoustic electric guitars for 100 bucks. Is there other guitars better at the price or should i get this one ?

  • I just recently bought an Ashthorpe classical guitar for 40$ and although I'm just a beginner everything I've seen and heard tells me their quality control is doing its job. The guitar is put together well and is structurally sound! Sounds and plays well. I'm sure some of the guitar snobs out there in music land wouldn't give it the time of day but hey like I said; for a beginner the price is right and quality is more. It came with nylon strings. ????

  • While no one will ever mistake them for a Taylor or Martin, they are solid for the price. I've played Ibanez acoustic/electric s that retail more than double the price of this that don't feel or sound any better than these out of the box. Spend a little time setting it up and dialing it in and it's a far better value. What's great is that anyone regardless of ability can pick up this guitar and enjoy it. While it's probably best suited for beginners, intermediate and advanced players that are just looking for a knock around "campfire" guitar look no further. It's also great for something to drag out to open mic nights. I always would get a little nervous carrying around my nicer guitars with me to a packed bar. If it gets bumped or dropped no biggie and because it's an Ashthorpe there isn't much of a threat of theft. And even if there was so what I'm only out $120. Better than $700+.

  • Half way into the video I got distracted realized your clothes were transparent against the background. All I could think about was Bill Cosby in Ghost lol

  • Kinda wanted to see the gig bag. It looks amazing on Amazon. Thanks for the video, we review inexpensive guitars too and this one is coming up soon.

  • I ordered the blue cutaway with black accents. It's not a cutaway, there's no transducer for amplification, the headstock is wrong, nothing like what's pictured. I'd return it, but I need it.
On the plus side, it did include a nifty electronic tuner. ????

  • How is the bridge? I have seen videos, and seen myself, that the damn bridge detaches on you slowly, but surely over time.

  • I’m interested in getting one of these but can’t decide between the thin line or a classic dreadnought style. Any pointers in choosing one or the other? Any issues with the bridge separating or anything? Thanks!

  • Very helpful , I kept trying to find reviews on the Ashthrope guitars and just couldn't find any so thank yo u

  • Paul Borghese, between the 2, I prefer the thinline, but there's really not a huge difference on sound even with the thinner body
