  • Man, I love your videos! They're incredible. Do you think these two can pull off a live performance (Heavy metal style) without a PA?

Grazie mille, Leo, continua a postare questi fantastici contenuti, siamo felici di seguirti. Sei il migliore. Saluti.

  • For me a good FR FR cab must be stereo and have 2 HP maybe 2 x 10. Because most guitar processors have stereo outputs and several effects like reverbs sound much better in stereo.

  • great video! I am not sure if you have made one already but it would be great to see a comparison between a modeller w/ FRFR cab (I'd prefer the Tonex one) and the real deal. Let's say "Modeller w/ deluxe reverb model and celestion IR and FRFR" compared to an actual deluxe reverb with a celestion speaker dialled in to a similar tone. this is just an example…whatever amp you have available really!

  • Thanks for the video Leo. What is your opinion on using a powered PA with a 10" speaker (yamaha, jbl, etc) with an amp simulation? I have an ampero II and use monitors at home, but I'm thinking about using a PA when jamming with my friends. These guitar FRFR speakers are very expensive in my country

  • Thus far I've extensively tested in rehearsal and live both of them including a few others, I settled on passive 15' x 2 ways as my solution, even one doesn't take up much more transportation than these conventional type cab/s..the standout is passive with a Crown power amp with the right transformer on board, it's chalk and cheese to myself and can toe-to-toe with boutique guitar amp rigs…the power amp is the key!!—-the smartest thing to ever leave Italy is DB Tech bins and absolutely anything Kertron.
The DB bins are pure heaven too when mic'ed up of course!

  • Hi Leo, thanks for the video. You set the CUT knob on the Fender FR-12 to noon, which is actually too high and far from flat, as it cuts a lot of the higher frequencies. I think this is why the reverb didn't come through as well compared to the ToneX Cab. Cheers!

  • Any comparison video that I've seen, including this one, IMHO, the Fender always sounds better.

  • IMO Tech 21 was so ahead of its time, with sansamps and then with the Power Engine series, which are basically the FRFR cabs of their time. Their amps (at least the Trademark 120 I have) also use very transparent speakers, I discovered it by accident, when I tried running an amp head into its speakers, sounded exactly ilke a preamp direct into a mixer with no cab sim. Makes for a very good sounding stereo system in a pinch.

  • ?? At what point does the Tonex introduce distortion? My main reason for buying this would be to use in a band with a drummer, so if it distorts it is useless.

  • Great video Leo! I use a pair of HeadRush 8" FRFR cabs running in stereo with my rig. At home, I use a Digitech Trio + along with it for bass and drums and layered rhythm guitar parts. The FRFR cabs really make modelers shine. God bless and rock on ????????????

  • Even the Fender fr-12 got so much more expensive now… It's as expensive as small nice valve amp. I hope if I buy one of those it's going to be worth my money.

  • Another good demo, tone X sounds brighter and Fender warmer, I’ve been experimenting with the power amp on my katana Artist although not FR and GX 100. Congratulations on the Pope naming himself after you, Il Papa Leo ????????✝️

  • Cool video. Thanks Leo. I know nothing about these. Can the Tonex speaker be used with any amp
Modeler or does it favor compatibility with the Tonex pedal?

  • What a great comparison! Thanks. The Fender is probably "broken in", where the ToneX needs more time. This loosens up components like the speaker cone allowing for optimal performance. I have the FR-12 with the ToneX Cab on the way once they start shipping. I was going to sell the Fender but will keep it and for a stereo rig = best of both worlds.

  • Grazie! Ottimo video!
Peccato che il Tonex doveva essere disponibile da aprile, ma dopo tre rinvii ora mi dicono che la data di consegna non può più essere stabilita.

  • the high frequency control in the neutral case should be set to zero as higher values will start to cut high frequencies!

  • Thanks Leo for the very informative video! What about latency? Surely there must be some added for the IRs in the Tonex? Not sure if the Fender preamp adds any AD/DA conversion stage…

  • I own and use a Fender FR12. I'm running an Axe FX 3 into it, and with the Axe output at 50% I can't raise the volume on the FR-12 higher than 3 or it's painfully loud. I'm always surprised to see other people use them and it doesn't seem overpoweringly loud. I've watched other videos where people comment that it's not that loud. I wonder what the difference is?

Also, if you need all of that volume, the fact that the Tonex was distorting seems to be a big deal. I don't know how much of a real-world problem that would be. I don't need that much volume!

I used to use a Headrush FRFR. The Fender sounds much better, and (for me) is hugely louder. However, even though it's 'only' 28 pounds, the Fender FR is larger and heavier than I want to carry around. So, I ended up taking the Headrush to jams and leaving the Fender at home.

  • I went with the FR-12. I don't need another IR loader and the extra DSP + ADA conversion would just add latency. The Fender has a simple through-hole PCB analog preamp that can be easily upgraded/repaired.

  • With the slightly longer hairstyle, I imagine you as a player of the Squadra Azzurra of the 90s-00s. Like, I'd imagine you next to Andrea Pirlo, Alessandro Del Piero, Italian technique and elegance on a football pitch ????

  • We need a tonex cab vs laney fr cab comparison as many people swear the laney fr was the best fr cab before tonex cab was out.

  • Hello Leo,can you expand a bit more about the “amp tone “ function on the ik? How does it work, how’s the results to your ear ?

  • This comparison is a wonderful contribution to the community (as usual for Leo). In my humble opinion, though, it would have been better to compare the ToneX with the Fender FR-10, which I find to be punchier and better balanced. I wouldn’t buy the FR-12, myself, but might buy the FR-10. The ToneX doesn’t please me tonally in any of the many videos I have checked out. They all reveal a sound signature that just isn’t my thing.

  • Thanks, Leo. Curious if you tried the amp in room shaping on the Tonex Cab and what you thought of it – would you personally use it in a live situation?

  • Thank you very much Leo! I was wondering about the Tonex Cab as I use a Tonex Pedal into my second hand FR10. It is a very interesting comparison. Im happy with my FR10 particularly as I got it used but mostly for the weight – my back is bad and the lighter 2 or 3 kg make a big difference. Thank you again so very much!

  • Hurray – at last a video on FRFR speakers! It's been a long time coming, but well worth the wait! It is probably the most appropriate comparative review to start out with and you have done your usual excellent job, providing information I haven't seen in other similar reviews. I hope you continue to include FRFR speaker reviews and comparisons from time to time, as these are such an important part of the modeller or profiler signal chain, when not playing or recording direct through a computer. And there are are many other units out there to compare, as others have mentioned in their comments.

As regards the two units you have reviewed today, do you think they are suitable for home use or only really justified for gigging?

  • Thanks for the video Leo great content as always! Did you by any chance check when you were testing at what % volume the ToneX cab started to distort the tone?
    Have a great day!

  • Question for debate. What would be the advantage of the tonex cab with tone shape when you just want to use it as a plug and play and to use your already built tones in any modeler? The IR loader idea is good cause you can free DSP in your modellers and use it for other fx, but i really think that sometimes all the digital solutions want to do more than the goal they were built to….
