Biggest Bass D.I. Shootout Ever (Noble/REDDI/JHS/Origin)

This was an undertaking unlike any other gear video I’ve attempted to put together. The immense support I received from everyone involved can never be talked about enough. I hope you get a chance to go and try all these wonderful pieces of gear in-person, and leave this video feeling a little more informed about what a DI can do for you and your sound than when you arrived.

Thanks to Jad Freer, A Designs, Jule Amps, Perfect Circuit, Sushi Box, JHS, Origin Effects, Trickfish, Ampeg, and MXR for coming through last-minute with pieces to feature in the video.

Thanks to John Davis, Sean Hurley, Juan Pablo Alcaro, and Ian Martin Allison for their generosity with their time in speaking with me on the phone for the video, and to Reggie Hamilton for making time for me to hang on to the REDDI during filming.

To all the builders whose gear I have played for many years now, like Caveman, Teletronix, and especially to Jack Roan at Noble for hooking me up with a single digit serial number prototype all those years ago, it’s people like you all that make it way more fun to do what I do.

  • Important Notes About This Video:

I talk about not being able to turn off the cabsim with the Origin Effects BassRig. That's not entirely accurate, and I should have clarified what I meant. You can turn off the cab sim, but only when the pedal is bypassed. So it's possible to get a completely clean DI signal (something I failed to do in the "clean" portion of the video) by switching the toggle to "FX" and bypassing the pedal. My basic point still stands though: It would be even more of a killer pedal if you could use the EQ and the rest of the pedal without the cabsim on. People have commented that you can turn it off on the 1/4 inch output, but then we're not talking about it being a DI.

I'm sure this list of corrections will grow… I'll update as and when things come up.

  • Why is the preamp/eq on for some but not others? Not exactly a fair apple-to-apples comparison. I.e. the Miura K3 (and others) have a DI, yes, but they are more than that…first and foremost a preamp. The K3 sounds siginicantly better with the preamp engaged. Most all other boxes have their premps engaged, Ampeg, etc.

  • Good comparison. Two things stood out for me and confirmed what I thought when I owned both of these pedals. The Bassrig with Cabsim is naturally dull. There is an articulation you get with the pedal off that I couldn't get back using EQ with the pedal on. Having said that I may give one another go. Also, the Finally sounds like there is a HPF active all the time.

At the moment I'm running an Origin DCX into an RNDI.

  • My only complaint about most of those preamps is they are models of flavors of ampeg, and I don't do ampeg.

  • Thank you for this. The only problem with this video is that it meant spending less time studying your Chordal Harmony book !! 🙂

  • Where is ReVolt Bass Two Notes? Where is NUX Melvin Lee Davis? 🙂 Forgot or… ?

  • As an R&B touring and session bassist, hands down the Ampeg SGT for me. Headphone jack and my two favorite amps with cab sims built in.

  • They all sound real good. The Noble still has a cleaner, articulate, rounder sounds than the others.

  • Have you ever tried out the Laney Digbeth preamp? If so, what are your thoughts in general? Love the videos as always!

  • I don’t hear anything exceptional about the Noble compared to other cheaper DI’s. Is this a situation where I would need to hear its response versus what I’m feeling when I play ?

  • This video inspired me to go check out jazz because so many of the baselines he played are really, really awesome. I would love to try this type of playing and other types of music

    Tasty groove too
To be honest you could plug you’re bass in to ???? and you would sound great ????

  • I am watching this Shootout for the 5th time now through out months. Now my question is… Is it worth to have a DI if you are satisfied with your amp's DI and you always gig with an amp? GK have very decent DI and I am wondering if there is a benefit of having external DI. Would appreciate your thoughts!

  • Hard to distinguish among pedals due to wimpy playing, low in the mix. Video could have been so much better.

  • Thanks Janek amazing content as always ! And big thanks to John, Ian, Juan and Sean for the knowledge, I learned a lot!

  • For me it is a bit of a matter of taste, the price does not play a role in this comparison, I certainly would not spend money on a Noble device. this whole battle which preamp is the best reminds me a bit of the ‘audiophile’ market. Where no one can hear a significant (or any) difference and in blind tests they often choose cheaper products because they sound better to them, and in tests where everyone can see what they are playing, they try to explain the high price with some incomprehensible arguments.

  • I can hear some variations from box to box, but it's slight. I dont think that anyone in an audience at a gig or anyone listening to a recording with a band is going to say that one tone was "bad" and another is "better" than any other. So, chasing after the hot new pedal really isnt going to make any difference to what the paying customer thinks. At least that's my opinion.

And if that's the case, then it comes down to personal preference, cost, features, and build quality. To me, the big deal breaker would be if one broke or had a ton of noise. But, nobody should feel like they bought the wrong one from the list.

  • Bro. Thanks for the work. One tip. You can't use that wide of a lens and also wave your hands around that much and that close to the camera. It's like your actually doing it right up in my face and my screen is 10' from me.

  • Awesome video! Ordered my Colourbox JHS anniversary edition. Apparently so did a lot of people:) but looking forward to that…

  • While I agree with some of the comments here that most of these can be dialed to sound the same, I don’t think that’s the point. I want something to sit at the end of my board to send a signal to FOH that has a boost/cut and simple EQ. Once that baseline (pun) is set I can make my sound.
I have had the MXR for years, and finally the DO port died on me. Looking at the Aguilar AG Pre now.

  • Really fascinating to see what different players gravitate towards. I'm generally a JHS favorable guy, but the color box was absolutely one of my least favorite comps in this video. I think its possibly a distinction for jazz bass players vs. p-bass players.

I've played on most of these, and this video confirmed a lot of my inclinations. Favorites for me are: CAPO, JDI, BassRig (black face version is my preference by a mile), SGT-DI (in b-15 mode), Nobel, and the MXR.

The Darkglass and even Walrus Audio could both probably be talked into the rotation for me too.

Great video. Thanks for all the effort to showcase everything reasonably
