  • I have a cv 60 and sonic and I felt the stock pickup and neck on the sonic were just better. I put an affinity p neck on the sonic with some daddario tapes and it’s one of the best sounding basses I have ever played.

  • I had a player II precision and last Christmas my son bought me a graffiti yellow sonic p bass. 5 months later i sold the player II and play the sonic every day.

  • In this example, the Fender P did sound slightly better than the CV. Just not enough there to justify the difference in price. Glad I bought the Squier CB 70’s burgundy.

  • Amazing how good the Sonic sounds. I tried one out the other day, without plugging it in (typical Guitar Center Experience, guy had every song he knew on his phone, and was playing bass to it). Anyway, I just wanted just to see what the neck felt like and It felt really nice. I thought it would be more like unfinished wood, but it had an excellent Satin finish. Good comparison video!

  • Ayo- those glasses look great on you— where did you snag them from? Model name?

  • The Squier 70s Classic Vibe sounds the best to me. It's got that heavy and deep punch that I want out of a Precision. I assumed it was a ceramic pickup, but I just checked and it's listed as alnico, so perhaps just overwound. And/or maybe a different number alnico magnet.

The Player has an alnico pickup as well, but it sounded really weak to me in every test except one, which was the fingerstyle amp sim; it came alive with that one, but in all the rest, I didn't like it.

Of course, upgrading the pickup is easy, the real trick is to find the bass that feels/plays the best, has good fit & finish, and inspires you.
And when comparing Squier to Fender, remember the following:

This Squier Classic Vibe = $470 MSRP // Top of Squier lineup = $600 // It's in the top 75% of the lineup.
This Fender Player = $750 MSRP // Top of Fender MIM lineup = $1,500 // It's at the 50% point of the lineup.

A $600 Squier is the very best of the Squiers, just as a $1,500 MIM is the very best of the MIM.
This Classic Vibe is closer to The Best Squier than this Player is to The Best MIM.

  • Player II sounds best because of what I presume is a superior pickup and electronics since there is no other reason for it. The Classic Vibe is one I would buy, have had my eye on the black one for years, but I really don't need one, have a late 80s Japanese P-bass that has a replacement Mexican neck that is Maple board/Black Blocks/binding. And my backup is an Ibanez Roadstar II from 84 with a maple board and Dimarzio pickup, so yeah, no real need for a third P-bass haha. But if I needed one, it would be that CV. But certainly not a rosewood board, puke.

  • I'm one of those who think the whole tonewood debate is nonsense and I could DEFINITELY hear a difference between the maple and the rosewood! So take that, me! Yeah, the RW neck definitely cleaned up the "clankiness" (clankosity?) and made that P sound like a P! I have various basses that have a Precision pickup in the middle position and so when I solo the Precision pickup…IT DON'T SOUND SO MUCH LIKE A PBASS, BOSS!! (What gives?! I keep trying ta think and NOTHIN' HAPPENS!!)

  • Thanks for the thorough demonstration. The expensive one sounds (and looks) more refined, but I'm still amazed in any such comparison how by far the biggest difference is the price, not the sound. Also, I must admit I sometimes prefer the "cheaper" sound of the entry-level model.

I started teaching myself bass briefly a summer 30 years ago, playing along to Sting and Police albums, and I have recently had a sudden craving to dabble again, and after listening to different comparisons, I am rather certain I'll just go for an entry level Squier I like the look of, probably a Jazz rather than a Player, and I'm sure I'd be rather happy with it.

  • Im sorry. Ive played plenty of p-basses over my years, and if you pay 1000 more for an american fender over a player one from mexico, youve been fooled. They are EXACTLY the same. Ive played both. The only difference is where they are made. Anybody that tells you different, is just salty for being ripped off.
