  • The Fender amp sounds best, however it is a beast (NOT light) ! Nice video.????????????

  • I think this is why I am moving to ToneX captures as opposed to the HX models. Its not that the HX models arent ok and perfectly usable. However if you have someone who does a good job with the overall capture signal chain, it ends up being much more open and harmonically rich than the HX models. After sampling many of the ToneX models of course they are not all equally as good nor are they are they as good as the real amp. But they are an improvement.

  • TMP comes across as closest in this deeply flawed comparison … (not volume matched; only the modelers REC direct; not a blind comparison; etc)

As you say, making good captures of the actual amp would be more interesting (but you can’t make profiles with a Kemper stage unit)

I’ve heard VERY bright Kemper profiles of Twins, that I know would sound much closer than what I’m hearing here … one of the Andertons video blind comparisons has a really bright Kemper Fender profile as one of the comparison units (yet, it also sounds the most open/amp-like … and probably reflects the sound of the amp that was profiled very well, since it was made by Tone Junkie).

With all my experience with all the profiling/capture and modeling units, I’d expect them to perform thusly (with good profiles/captures and a well-tuned model on the Stomp):

Kemper – best on cleans (and mid-gain sounds)
QC – generally behind the Kemper (but sometimes best (Captures!) for grittier/more gain-y amps, which this is not)
TMP – some nice models, but still behind the profilers/capturers (and even the top modelers, the Fractals) for sound. Nice Fender/Vox sounds, especially.
Stomp – lots of variety, but generally not the best sounding … (can be good if you value variety over sound, and several more-affordable cut-back h/w options)

… having said all that, your friend should buy the ToneX … It has the best amp sounds rn, and at a bargain price/great size.

There are several good reasons to hold off on the TMP, for now, as much as I do like it (especially the UI)

  • For me it's not if they sound the same as the real amp. It's about do you like playing it and do you feel inspired to play it.

  • Thanks for having me on, Aaron! The sound of the Tone Master Pro was very impressive in the room at the time of recording, however hearing these side by side I prefer the sound of the HX Stomp XL
