  • I had the honor of seeing Gary Moore live 4 times and he was beyond great every time: Cap Centre opening for Def Leppard & Krokus (Corridors tour), The Bayou in Washington D.C.(Wild Frontier), The Roxy in Los Angeles (Wild Frontier), & the Universal Amp (Still Got The Blues).

  • Gary Moore is because for me it will always be the Most Soulful Hard Rock and Blues Guitar Player and Vocalist. Unique Style and Heavy Singing Tones. He's for Me in the Hendrix Clapton Page Beck Blackmore An Eddie and Lukather And Stevie And Schenker. Beautiful Voice Master of The Volume Knob . A Real Guitar Master

  • Check out Gary's performance of Red House on the 2004 Fender Stratocaster 50th Anniversary. What an extreme talent he was and the passion in his playing is breathtaking.

  • I love Gary Moore, but don’t want to hear anything about his super short stint in Thin Lizzy. Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson are Thin Lizzy period !!!

  • Massively under-appreciated but an outstanding guitarist. I was fortunate to see him a few times, the concert you refer to is BBC Sight and Sound in concert in 1984. I recommend anyone to watch it 30 mins well spent

  • Gary was a great guitar player to be sure, he could sing too, I think one of the main reasons he never reached the level
of other great guitar players was because of his tone and the production on his albums. It was too cold and metal sounding and lacked warmth, even on the blues albums, there was just something not right with the absence of warmth with his tone and the production and his albums always seemed to be out of step with the era they were recorded with the execution of “Still Got The Blues” and “Back To The Blues” which sold well.

It makes sense Bonamassa was influenced by him because he takes a page out of Moore’s generic production sound, the main problem with Bonamassa as opposed to Moore though is Joe plays the notes, but that’s all that comes mess through, there isn’t a whole more, where as Gary played with soul.

  • I was so fortunate to see Gary Moore in concert in 1987 in Dallas when he opened for Ace Frehley and Y&T. Gary Moore blew them off the stage. He was incredible live.

  • Gary Moore has been my favorite guitar player for years, I'm only 28 years old but I wish I had the opportunity to ever saw him live. His rocking albums are my favorites although I also do enjoy his blues and fusion period. There is no one that plays with so much emotion as Gary.

  • The Les Paul, known as Stripe, 9 2227, was the main Les Paul used on the SGTB album. He kept this guitar over the Greeny lp.

  • Gary could make a Broomstick sing!! That video you speak of with Albert Collins, Albert King and BB King is the show which only came out on VHS. It also featured short interviews with these players, it's phenomenal.

  • Here in Sweden, and probably throughout Europe, Gary Moore was well-known and beloved, clearly a household name. This was certainly due in large part to his connection with Thin Lizzy, who were also very popular here in Sweden.

  • Thanks Hack & Pete! I have the Thin Lizzy stuff, and I've heard a few solo tracks, but I'll have to dive into it a little bit! I'll start with, Corridors & Victim.

  • Great episode. Corridors of Power!, Victims of the Future!. I feel fortunate to have seen him play live at L'amours in Brooklyn in the 80's. Legend.

  • I always wondered if his album covers were better, it would maybe caught the attention of people browsing through albums in the store. Back in the day we’d buy albums just for how cool the album looked even without knowing anything about the band

  • Great show guys. Absolute top 5 guitarist for myself as well. Witnessed his greatness at the old Capital Centre in Largo, MD. The Centre is gone, but the memories remain. Gary was opening for Def Leppard and Krokus. It was the Pyromania, Blitz, and Victims of The Future Tour. Unfortunately Gary played only for about one hour. Fortunately, it was the best hour of the night. Gary stole the show and he was magical.

  • My favorite Gary Moore moment (and there are hundreds), is the video of Cowboy Song from the Lizzy show at the Sydney Opera House in 1978. He's great during the whole song, but his last solo of that song epitomizes what a Rock Star is, just incredible.

    4. Back on the streets
    3. Corridors of powet
    2. Victims of the future
    1. Dirty fingers
One of my favourite guitar players. Saw him multiple times from Victims of the future to Still got the blues. Still listen to his Hardrock albums all the time. Great show!

  • Much prefer his 80’s hard rock material like Dirty Fingers, the blues songs were blistering but didn’t seem as authentic to me as guys like Johnny Winter or SRV. I saw SRV in 90 and Gary Moore in 91 and both were scary good.

  • This is my sweet spot for Gary but, if I'm being completely honest, there are at least three of his Blues albums that I could've had tied for a spot on my five. Gary went to work every time he picked up a guitar. The dude could shred with the best of them and he had tasty melodic chops too. Gary could literally bring a tear to your eyes. Not many players had that ability.
    5) Wild Frontier
    4) Run for Cover
    3) Dirty Fingers
    2) Corridors of Power
    1) Victims of the Future

  • 1.) Victims of the Future (import version w/black cover, alternate tracks)
2.) Corridors of Power (my entry point since seeing the "Always…" video in '82)
3.) Run for Cover (love this direction! Wish he and Glenn would have pursued this further)
4.) Dirty Fingers (sadly overlooked, forgotten. Arguably his most metal album)
5.) Back on the Street (an eclectic gem)

  • BBM, where was I when this came out? I suppose they never got to tour and their one album flew under my radar.

  • " Shapes of Things " from the album Victims of the Future = One of the best covers ever made? I think so!

I am not sure about my ranking of a top 5 from Gary Moore but Thin Lizzys Black Rose would be on my list. Probably a Colosseum II album as well (I enjoy all three).

    Some songs I'd recommend:

    Colosseum II – Major Keys
Gary Moore – Long Grey Mare
Thin Lizzy – Waiting for an Alibi
Gary Moore – Blood of Emeralds

None of these songs sound remotely the same. A very upbeat and fun progressive track, fast and short blues, classic hardrock and an emotional epic.

Gary Moore is very missed. I have a hard time picking favorite guitar players since there are so many but Gary Moore is always on the list. Just like Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Van Halen, Mark Knopfler, Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page, Michael Schenker and Joe Satriani.

  • Great episode. I've always felt that the "Dirty Fingers" album was Gary's answer to The Michael Schenker Group. ????
