Hey everyone! Today we’re taking an in depth look at the Yamaha BB735A as well as looking at the evolution of the Yamaha Broadbass. Featuring a multi-wood body and a lot of features normally reserved for the high-end Japanese-made Yamahas, the newly redesigned BB series is looking to be a workhorse. Let’s check it out!

This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with MJC Ironworks Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at www.mjcironworks.com

  • I’m curious to know whether you feel that having the three way switch on the BB414 instead of a blend knob limits the versatility of the bass in any way?

  • Another reason for this sound is the amp. What make and power and speaker size are you playing this bass through. Much appreciated! Thank You

  • Dug this up to rewatch. My 734 arrives tomorrow! I gifted my 434 to my nephew for his 16th birthday last year, and I've been looking forward to replacing it ever since. Excellent basses.

Anyway, I've seen a couple reviews say the preamp is just kinda average. What replacement preamp would you recommend for this bass (playing mostly heavy rock)?

  • The weird thing for me is I just bought the 734a and the jazz pick up is totally hum free. Very pleasant bass to play and that active switch blows me away,

  • Preamp is really transparent. I have the 734a and usually leave it flat. If I was looking for a 5er I would look elsewhere.

  • Im a little confused, you mention bringing up each eq value first to center and then to 50%, isnt center 50% ????? can you clarify.

  • For my money, the Orange BB sounds better. Thanks for the tip about the non hum canceling J pick up. I’ve got a BBP34 that is extremely well made. As a P bass it kills. The J pickup buzzes and sounds harsh to me. I’ll be looking into a hum free replacement.

  • Thanks a lot for this review! I'm interested in getting the 4 string. The noisy bridge pickup is s bit concerning, but how noisy was it in active mode?
I thought it sounded amazing, even just listening on my phone!

  • If I already have this BB734a, will worth buy an Squier Classic Vive 70th just to have a precision bass, or do you think that the the yamaha already do a good work with their split coil?

  • I have a 2011 BB 424. It kills! It's a tone beast, the only bass you can solo the bridge pup and still get lots of meat on the bone.

  • In the past I owned a 1025X, loved everything about it minus the weight.. really hefty bass.

Fast forward to today, just purchased a 414 which is currently at the luthier’s for adjustments. I have to say, I was so impressed with the feather-like weight. It’s the perfect weight for a bass! ????

  • B string sounds about average for a 34" scale. I think the bass you verbally compared it to is at least 35" on the B string. That extra scale length makes a huge difference in the strength of the notes. But IME those extra long scales push the bass to the left too much. So I make do with 34" low B's for comfort's sake. You can coax a bit more definition by doing some left-hand muting to cut down on some of the higher harmonics, which will bring out more of the fundamental and lower harmonics. Thanks for the video, the tone is great and I'm going to get one of these basses for next season.

  • Bro, have you heard of that spanish Yamaha bass player, Vincen Garcia? Dude is so good

  • Love them both, but the 414 kicks the 735's @ss sound wise. Maybe it's also the strings etc, but it sounds warmer, darker and more… more… bass face

  • Ive just bought a Yamaha BB 434.
It's nice and light. Slender neck.
I will probably replace the pickups, though.
Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounders, perhaps? ❤

  • Try some namebrand strings on that bass Qatar and I'll probably sound a lot better than that garbage that you use it

  • Always loved the Yamaha sound, and in particular the BB series.
I have to say, the older 414 sounds just as good, if not better!
