Should I run the compressor before my EQ?
I play very clean Jazz like tones and I've tried using overdrives to "color" my tone but they always seem to muddy up my signal no matter how clean I set them. Since I saw this Video and the compressor tutorial from rolandmedia (Johnny Demarco – on compressors) I've replaced the OD's with compressors and the results were amazing. The compressor is a wonderful tone shaper that allows you to fatten up your tone without shaping it and roll off the rough edges of your notes making them silky smooth. I use one compressor to contour my rhythm tone and give me some sustain. I also have two separate compressors in series for two different lead setting giving me variations of dynamics and singing sustain while allowing me the opportunity to stack them (David Gilmour style) if I wanted to .

Compressors suck they produce tons of hiss and more noise in the signal its all in the hands not the little boxes.
