  • Not for nothing dude but I bought the bass guitar cause as soon as I heard that baseline, I was sold. Ever since then I've been searching high and wide for an accurate video detailing how to imitate fleas technique, thank you so much for the insight, patience and description you gave in this video. Consider me subbed

  • I don't think Flea's technique works at all with a 5 string bass, since it causes a lot sympathetic vibrations since his technique isn't very precise, which is why many 5 string bass players use the double thumb/ parallel slapping. Sorry for going off on a tangent… Cool bass lesson!

  • So we could say: The 5 string is not the proper bass guiter for slapping then???

  • I can't get it to sound like that with my thumb.  It only really works if I hit the thumb on the string and then drag it down to the fret board to get a clear sound.  Oh and my thumb is throbbing now!  LoL

  • Sir, I'm not sure if you check your.comments. thank you. I have finally found someone who can explain what octaves are using the numbered tabs. I've had my beginner base for about 3 years. I managed to learn 2 songs, but I'm too nervous and afraid to continue. Thanks to this video, I can now learn one of my favorite songs, improve and possibly gain more confidence in playing. I feel motivated. Thank you

  • It has something to do with your bass. How high the strings are, how your bridge is, your bass model, etc. However this is a common problem, and i think a new bass is needed to remove the sound. 🙂

  • Unfortunately many things can cause rattling. if it's ONLY when you slap, and you hit the strings hard like Flea does, if your action is not high enough, your strings will rattle against the frets as they vibrate. You would need to raise your strings or loosen your truss rod, or play lighter. A lot of guys who use ultra low action and light strings hit the strings lightly (see: Victor Wooten). Your strings could also be rattling in the nut slots. Or there could be a loose nut or tuning peg.

  • When I slap it. I get a rattling sound. I'm guessing this is due to my technique and I'm either hitting the string too hard so it hits my fret board, or I need new strings.
Can anyone tell me why I get this sound sometimes?

  • Overrated? Please explain your reasons for saying that. Flea is a top notch player without doubt. Also please tell us all the 'TOP-NOTCH' players that Flea just dont measure up to. Really just embarresed yourself there when you shoulda just said 'Great player, just not my thing'.

  • Good lesson. Flea is very good. There is so much more to the bass than slapping. I may struggle with this technique, but I can play other styles expertly. I am trying to diversify. I can play YYZ, but not Higher ground! Thanks for this video Brother.

  • By no means do I mean to say Flea invented slapping, sorry if it seemed like that! This just covers his approach, which is a little different than, say, Victor Wooten or Bill Dickens- Flea hits the strings a lot harder, etc. I think he's far beyond an average bass player, it all depends on how you measure them. Can he play a billion notes per second like Wooten? No, but I think Wooten overplays and is too flashy, not nearly as melodically interesting as Flea is. It's all a matter of opinion.

  • Flea has been used as a session bassist on at least 2 huge hits I know of, in completely different genres (Bust a Move by Young MC and You Oughta Know by Alanis Morissette), plus played with Mars Volta, Jane's Addiction, and others. He has great physical skill on the bass, and has been part of a mega hit making songwriting team for 30 years while creating great, creative bass lines. I've seen him overplay and hit some clams from time to time, but despite that he is a top notch bass player.

  • It's a Schack, a handmade German bass. Very hard to find, Andy Schack seems to produce them sporadically, not sure if he's currently in business.
