  • Me, a professional bass player for 5 years, watching this to make sure I wanna be a bass player

  • Yeah but I'm 59 now and my lessons ended when my dad died in 1981. Should I start all over again? It's always been about the bass n drums for me but I dunno. That, and I'm a Southpaw…

  • Bass.. Guitar… play both to understand both roles that they play in ALL kinds of music… (and not w@nky solos à le "Splash")

  • Only a true bassist understands that this is from the soul. We don’t play to be heard. We play to be felt.

  • yeah it kinda depends on the genre, there's a lot of examples of bass players taking center stage or being the main draw

like there's really nothing more front and center than a chunky slap groove IMO lol

  • So I can play bass normally for the rhythm and other stuff but I also can get a sick solo, so is it for me?

  • If a band has a gig at 9 PM, the lead guitarist drops by the drummers house at 5 PM and wakes him up. then he goes to the harmonica players house and locks up the herb and the bong. Next he bails out the bass player. on the way home he drops by the drummers house and wakes him up again.

  • And Rush, The Police, Motorhead…etc. Don't forget, the 1897 trench gun will slam fire too!

  • If you've played guitar for years but all of a sudden start hearing bass lines in your head…AND MEDICATION DOESN'T WORK…the bass might be for you. Grab a decent USED instrument of the wall of a Guitar Center (~$100) plus a cheap, 30W USED bass amp. You already know the fretboard so you have a HUGE advantage. Start with 12-bar blues which is the basis for sooooo much music. FEEL the bass lines…stay in the low registers supporting the songs you play. I started on guitar in 1959, moved to bass in 1992…at 77, I'm still on stage as as bassist and vocalist. NEVER STOP PLAYING!!!!!!!

  • With so many mates that are great lead guitarists, I put down the 6 string and took up bass in order to be able to jam with them and have my own spot in there bands from time to time.
They helped me learn and wrote some songs suited to my skill also.
With everyone wanting to play guitar to be in the spotlight, you’ll find yourself in demand being a bass player too.

  • My main instrument is guitar, but I’ve always found myself better at improv on bass. Might switch.

  • For me its "do you like the tone of this instrument?"

If yes, then play it. Dont do it or not do it for some technical reason.

  • "In a band"

Me: ha you assume i have friends or basically interact with human beings, gotcha again

  • Nope. Bass can do everything, rhythm harmony and melody. Play bass if you want to be awesome, if you want to be a unique behind the scenes player like Ox or Harris or McVie or be a unique front man like Thundercat, Squarepusher, Wooton or Primus.

  • Few frontmen can pull off singing and playing bass. With Night Ranger and Winger, bass suffered because the bass guitar was being "played" by a preening, bum-wiggling lead singer. There's VERY few Stings and Geddy Lees out there.

  • Who is she to say??!? Seriously. She kinda needs to get off her high horse already. There are way better bass players out there.

  • Bass doesn't support a song; it provides the framework that the other instruments hang their shiny, jingly jangle stuff from 😀
