I bought the D’Angelico Deluxe Mini because I have severe shoulder problems and can’t play my archtop jazz guitars any longer.

We’ll check on the build quaity, playability and of course lots of D’Angelico Deluxe Mini sound examples.

This guitar is a great jazz guitar, but is very versatile. So I’ll play some Funk, Blues and Hendrix style as well.

  • I don't know if this guitar is good or not because Sandra can make any guitar sound incredible. The tone is in her fingers.

  • Wonderful playing Sandra, and terrific job on the review! You did an excellent job of highlighting the great tone and fantastic quality of D’Angelicos. ????

I fell in love with D’Angelico when I bought my Deluxe Brighton (the Seth Lovers got my attention), which has all the same features— inlays, an ebony board, and even the same controls— but also my favorite pickups: the Seth Lovers with A4 magnets. They split so nicely and sound absolutely fantastic. Your sentiments are exactly spot-on to mine. Best fretwork of any guitar I've owned in my 35 years of playing, and that includes my US Gibsons, Fenders, PRS Cores, etc. Perfectly rounded frets, high polish on those Jescar med-jumbo frets. Not a buzz to be found right up to the easy access 22nd fret. Sexiest neck joint I've ever touched.

My second D'Angelico – I used to have an Epiphone ES-339, but I didn’t care much for it— especially the D-shaped neck with its particularly large shoulders. Instead of bothering to upgrade it, I sold it and got the Mini DC. However, after spending so much on gear (inc a Martin d-35, eek!) over the previous two years (including the Brighton), I settled for the Premier version of the Mini DC. Fortunately, I was able to swing the Sweetwater version with their XT upgrade, which added the Seymour Duncan Jazz/JB set and locking tuners. I thought I was compromising, but itsure doesn't feel or sound like it. $899? Wow!

I’m a rocker, so it definitely rocks with the JB in the bridge! The fretwork's great (also Jescar fretwire) and it has the same neck profile as your Deluxe. But yes, the Deluxe is just that— Deluxe— and they absolutely exude that extra level of quality, and they're such a comparitive bargain. I got my Brighton, new, for $1199 USD from Sweetwater (also one of their exclusives – in color only). Bargain of the century IMO. My Les Paul Standard was $2499, and while it does that thing, that only a Les Paul can do, my Brighton plays better – and it plays great. I'd love to hear the Les Paul with the Seth Lovers in it. ????

Sorry for the lengthy post. I still get very excited about gear. But D'Angelico? Definitely an underappreciated, overlooked brand, though they're adding new models all the time. And I think the Deluxe Mini DCs now come with Supro pickups. I'm not sure if that's an upgrade, or just a different flavor. Anyone heard?

  • Sandra, you might like to know I was interested in this guitar after playing one at a local. Watched your video and now I have one. Beautiful instrument.

  • Hello Sandra, you really coax a lovely jazz sound out of that Deluxe Mini DC. Just curious on your thoughts about the guitar a year later, are you still enjoying it? I crashed my bicycle in Italy this past summer, finally had right shoulder surgery in the fall, but at age 72, I doubt I'll be able to get back to playing a full size hollow body. So I'm in the same predicament you found yourself in, needing something smaller with less width and depth. Do you still recommend the Deluxe DC mini as a top choice for a smaller jazz box? Thanks!

  • Hi Sandra. Thanks for that video! I am currently torn between the guitar in your video and the Eastman t484. I have tried the latter at a local shop and love it, but I haven't been able to find a shop in the UK where I can try the D'angelico. I got a question on the D'angelico…in the video you get some creamy round and warm tones…did you have to roll back the tone a lot in the guitar? I have seen other reviews that say that the pickups in that guitar can sound shrill at 10. What's your take on that. I want that guitar to play blues. Thanks

  • before anything else, i was blown away by the quality of this video! very well done!

ive been playing acoustic guitar for about 3 years now… when i bought my first electric last month… i just cant play my acoustics the same way again!

now, i thought this would be more of a little experiment so i didn't spend too much money on my first semi hollow… i got a guild starfire 1 dc, it looks ok and it sounds great but i think if i need something more appropriate if its going to be my main… (im definetly still keeping it for gigs and whatnot)

now i dont want to get a 335 because to me they look boring aesthetically (thats subjective, im just saying thats what i feel about it…) so i was considering either getting any one of these d'angelico guitars (i have my eyes mainly on the excel mini dc the one in the vintage natural finish!)

or going up the starfire line and getting the flame maple starfire vi?

    what should i do?

  • Hi from Australia ???????? Sandra
Thank you so much for all your hard work and excellent videos.
    Q. Can you please tell me what Amplifier you are using in the D’Angelico Mini DC?
I have just received the 16” version of this guitar after watching your most excellent review on this guitar.
I am playing it through Fender Blues Junior
I find the sound not Warm and Mellow like what you have- Very Trebly and Quacky despite the Bass being set at 9 and Middle and Treble on 3.
Did you have any changes made to this guitar? For example different Potentiometer values?
I hope you receive my message and wish you all the best
    Steve Burch Melbourne Australia ????????

  • I have the Bob Weir Deluxe Bedford, it is the most amazing guitar I’ve ever had. They are So underrated. I believe they are one of the most well built, quality and works of art you can buy. Of any manufacture. And the tones…. Incredible. Awesome video and playing, thank you sooooo much.

  • Sandra thak you so much for a great explanation for why you use the Deluxe Mini Dc. I just ordered one from Sweetwater in the US. The are doing a Plek pro set up on it. Could you let me know what kind and gauge strings you prefer on the guitar and how you would describe your preferred action. From your lessons etc. I notice that you seem to use a light touch and still get nice clean notes and tone with no fret buzzing. I've been through many high end semi and hollow jazz guitars and now just want one "Swiss army knife" guitar. I just got tire changing from different size nuts widths and also carrying around boat anchors. Thank you so much for all the time you dedicate making your excellent videos and for providing concise well explained fretboard and theory information. Best wishes Bob

  • this is a really good guitar… but it's a bit expensive
i cannot understand how come you can get a full body jazz guitar with great finishes and sound like the Ibanez GB10EM for 700€, but this one costs more than the double…
