???? September 9, 1970 is a date that will remain in the memory of all those who participated in the recording of what is today considered one of the best songs in history. A titanic work of blues-rock that has stood the test of time wonderfully and that shows, once again, Clapton’s heart-wrenching singing for an unrequited love.
Written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon with two clearly differentiated sections, “Layla” gives us the opportunity to make a rather unique harmonic analysis. Although the main riff of the song is developed in the key of D minor, it modulates abruptly to C# minor in the verses and returns to D minor in the choruses and the main solo section to enter into the Coda in the key of C major (making modal exchanges to its direct relative C minor using the Bb major chord).
It’s worth noting the tremendous contribution of Duane Allman (who joined the album’s recording sessions) to the song’s composition and performance with the main riff and slide guitar section.
Here I present my cover of this masterpiece, taking the slight liberty of omitting the slide part and adding a guitar solo of my own.
