NUX Solid Studio Mk II. The best amp modeller I’ve ever played.

Hello all

In this video I’m demoing the Solid Studio Mk 2 from NUX. It’s their latest offering on the Amp / Cab / Mic /ambience modelling arena.

The Solid Studio Mk 2 is a dual foot switch pedal about twice the size of a regular stompbox. It has a decent sized digital screen and an encoder wheel / button for controlling parameters. It also has individual buttons for accessing the Preamp, IR, EQ and Ambience. Editing is a breeze on the device itself and even easier with the editor.

The Solid Studio Mk 2 simply sounds amazing. The limited number of 8 amp models cover off any sound I personally would want. However players of much heavier music would need gain pedals to get really heavy sounds. Grunge is as heavy as I go and I needed a pedal with the Marshall SL sound to get into proper heavy territory. I’d be very surprised if there were’nt more amps added in the near future in an update.

But the sounds that are available are immediately inspiring as soon as I plug it in. I made 5 presets to cover off the sounds I might need and they all sound excellent and feel great under the fingers.

NUX’s amp modelling is superb.

If you are looking for an amp modeller for the end of you pedalboard or s cab sim to put in between your head and cab (THIS IS NOT AN ATTENUATOR OR LOAD BOX) look no further.

However if you are looking for something with an FX loop or MIDI look elsewhere.

  • New-x or do we say NUCKS ! its allways NUCKS ! i have the mg300 and the mg30 . i also have the time force and the mod force . i love the nux stuff . the mg30 is unreal .i use the scenes so i can change it up with one footswitch live . i use custom irs and custom patches . the vox sounds are really nice . i run a treble booster with a full range boost in the effects loop . i use eq . not very dramatic but thats interesting how you dont use it for that reason . the mg30 is an all in one solution for me . we play remote , so i use battery packs to power the mg30 . have been doing that for many years . i have a class d 600 watt pa that runs off a 48 volt e-bike battery . so we have been doing the remote thing since 2007 . the mg 30 is the best piece of gear i ever owned . my tone is so much better than it was . ik do not play a lot of high gain stuff but those tones are really good as well . i play mostly edge stuff or cleaner sounds . all of the patches have tempo matched ping pong delays , i use the ping pong and a panning delay for movement , i use both . i also split the signal and have a dry center channel amp . i use the american sound on that , or another modeler . going to try the spark mini next . i have one coming i got for 40 dollars .

  • I would say that you can hear the typical crackling sound of cheap digital modelers . . . for example at 15:10 . . . I think it's digital distortion . . . I wonder what causes it . . .

  • This looks like the amp modeller I’ve been waiting for! Great review! When will this be available in the UK?

  • I gotta say man, that thing does sound flat out awesome. I dont have an amp modeller. Im an old dude, and I own a Friedman Smallbox, a Bogner Alchemist, a Fender Blues Junior, and an original very early Ampeg Rocket. And Ive only ever used big block tube half stacks live, and somehow although i always seemed ro be playing in the loudest band in town no matter if Im playing guitar, druns or just singing, my bands really have never gotten the heat from club owners to turn down or your fired, so I know I have been extremely fortunate. Rhat particular amp simulator though, it just sounds so . right! I might need to get one and see for myself if it sounds as good as I think it does. It seems ro have that kerrang when you hit rhose chords that make playing loud through hot tubes just so satisfying even when just edging breakup. Its very convincing for sure. It and my HXFX would make a formidable pair I think.

  • First of all! It's so refreshing to have somebody arrange some good brit-rock parts over simple chords progression but making it fun and interesting, actually very grown up, kind of complex with just the right amount of notes to make it breathe and make each guitar part meaningful!

And that NUX sounds ABSOLUTELY KILLER! I feel like I'm going to need it in loop of my HELIX.

Thank you for great review. Fresh subscriber here.

  • Great video. One question I cant get answered. If I want to use it like solid studio mk1 can I? Just using poweramp sim? It looks to me like I cant do that because power amp is included with preamp and you cant select no preamp.

  • I had the nux mg300 and mg30 i hated how artificial and wrong the distortion sounds so id be really hesistant to buy nux again unless that was fixed properly

  • Man Nux is going to come out on top of all other competitors with this unit. Great sound no unnatural irritating compression and no noticeable digital noise anymore. Moreover it takes pedals well too. Amp modelling approaching great level now!

  • Yo, I like your channel but ya got this swimming in reverb and gawd knows what else…is this how you show off it's core tone….? anyway, I'm clicking away now….but I'll prob check in again sometime…I hope it'll be better.

  • Wait till next week… The best will come out again. Can you imagine in 2 weeks time how good the next will be? Psychiatrists must thank the audio industry for a lot of things

  • Well that looks interesting! Nice vid again ????????
I need to check one out now. I’m thinking a nice compact travel rig. Just need to hook up some delay/chorus in the chain somehow, and the other bits I use.
Of course I cant tell my Cerberus about this or there’ll be trouble ????

  • That's great, I share your enthusiasm about this modeller, in the room, lower volumes, recording tracks on a DAW, it has the potential as you've demonstrated, and I am into all of that i love that modelling amps, multu-fx processors, amp modellers can produce that big stage sound in the smaller near-field range, but what I'm also very interested in and invested in is which of the solid state selection of all of the above in my comment can still sound awesome at gigging levels, through PA'S to front of house, to the bigger Speaker Cabinets or FRFR, I wonder how many of the audience watching this demo/promotion/personal review… because it is very much like how you said, I'm paraphrasing- a very subjective thing, and I agree, I am also aware of the audience's POV, my own also included when I go to gigs of how complicated most of the bug band sound is processed and filtered and amplified so much that when it comes out the huge 4×12 cabs or whatever the set up, in the end the original sound (the base tone architecture) can be so processed through whatever way the artists and their team setup is based on… often sounds very very different from the end result of the signal chain, and I can see and appreciate the potential of amp, cab and fx modelling ability to simplify that whole process and cut costs while at the same time nit break your back with heavy analogue gear, I believe one day very soon we will have the most simple-yet-most- effective solid state versions of the whole analogue (still THE best tone!) signal chain through to Speaker essentially all in one to 3 places all incorporated as input-process-output digitally while mastering and even surpassing those (still THE Best) old vintage sounds going back as far as the 50s for God's sake!!
I believe its already progressed to an acceptable point since digital first boldly took that leap of faith when whoever it was recognised the importance and potential of digital audio and video capturing and processing on all fronts not just music, film, photography, whatever, Line 6 really made leaps and bounds so I stuck in with them back when the wee "line 6 kidney bean shaped pocket POD came out, on a tight budget being so young at the time but then went away and came back to them years after i was made aware of the Line 6 Pod Go multi fx, amp sim, cab sim, IR sim processor and WOW! from memory what a huge difference in fidelity and responsiveness so I'm back with Line 6 and that's without having the much more expensive and higher quality HELIX range (even though the pod go has helix tech/tones whatever)
But in a live scenario… you really need FRFR, or the best cabinet's designed FOR these types of processing pedals, and like you said NUX has gotten in your head, you're now bias, like I'm bias with Line 6, pod go or any of the more expensive of their range, but that tone you dialled in for ACDC "you shook me…" impressive it's spot on! I'm impressed enough to harp on about it all and take 20mins to thumb type this on my lunch break, but…
How will it sound At a gigging level for electric guitars, where you can expect decibel levels to range from 90 to 120 dB at a distance of between 1 to 20 meters, depending on the venue and intensity of the performance, volume of venue, I mean I wouldn't want to be 1meter away from even 65dB for longer than 15mins, but I'm sure you get my point. And the same question Is very much relevant for any other amp/cab- multi fx modeller-to- cabinet or front of house, PA arrangement especially line 6, as these tend to be advertised at bedroom levels much more than gig levels as solid state is not as loud as vac tube amps at the same wattage. I don't think I've ever seen a solid state processor of any kind let alone sid state amp been advertised/reviewed outside of bedroom/studio scenario's.. probably because of the volume difference., but I believe we are there, or very close to having the benefits of analogue gear setups all boiled down and simplified… made easier! And with all the best aspects of both incorporated in one to 3 pieces of kit- thus opening the doors to anyone with the desire of the heart/talent to be up on stage rocking it out ɓig time on a very very reasonable budget compared to what it would take to produce the vintage sound from between the 50s to the 80s (especially the 60s)
    It is very encouraging.
Thanks for the video review it's very much appreciated as I know what it takes to get that certain tone and response in both cases- analogue and digital.
    BIG ????'s up!

  • I've had the first Solid Studio. It was great for what it was. The Amp Academy wasn't really great good, I felt it was a bit glitchy. I've had the Boss IR-200, but I never could create a tonne that I'm satisfied with. When I tried the Friedman IR-X, I never looked back. But that's a different kind of box. Anyway, SS2 seems to be a big step up.

  • This looks like my next amp sim to go direct. But one thing I noticed is they have only one spot for effect , so after eq/amp/ir you can add delay or reverb. Why not both ? This confused me a little bit.

  • Another great Nux product! Only thing is I disagree on your dislike of the functionality of the AA. Part of the appeal to me of the Amp Academy is the ability to go from a very clean pedal platform to a lead distorted tone amp sim. You just really can’t beat that! W the XLR out and the ability to run time based and reverb effects thru the built in Effects loop is GENIUS lol. I watch your video on the AA and fully GET how you would want to or prefer to use it. Now we have this bad boy as a choice and the Nux Amp Core… have you ???? the Amp Core? These guys NUX keep knocking it out of the ball park… I even use one of their wireless units ???? stellar review as always sir????????????

  • Limited options are good! Have a boss GX10 and I love it but there's sooooo much stuff that even when I'm using an amp or effect modelI like I always think "eh, maybe this would sound better with a different one"

  • Sound comes from speakers so how does know if a modeler is good. I played on through several headphones sounded different in all also amps and amplified speakers. They were all so different on the same setting. Same for guitars…same setting sounds different for every instrument.

  • Isnt NUX like the cheapest Chinese / order me on Temo or Mecari type company? And your claiming BEST modeled amp you ever played? Maybe its good for NUX – but no way even on the bubble of being the best

  • thanks very much for the review. pretty clear approach 😉 .
so….there’s only one slot for ambience ?
no option of using a couple of delays on the same channel, simultaneously ?
or a reverb AND delay, for that matter ?
    cheers 😉

  • Great demo, fantastic sounding unit. I'm assuming you played the Outshined riff wrong for "copyright reasons"?
    Sorry.
    I'll get me coat.

  • yeah nah ill stick with tubes, every modeller ive heard seems to have a grainy fizz which does my head in, my kemper may see a baseball bat

  • sounds decent but far too much in one tiny pedal. I tried their amp academy, which sounded ok until you plugged pedals in, and it fell apart, it was also way too fiddly. I’ve gone with a Joyo Preamp house (which takes pedal like a champ) and a separate ir loader. The preamp house has no screen or menus, just rotary knobs, so you can look at it and know what you’ve got.

  • Nope. I'm sure it's a cool pedal but as usual too much fiddling, tweaking, and adjusting. I just use a mini tube head with DI connection.

  • You can't buy this anywhere right now- I googled it, and the only place it's available is Japan. Would you take this over say a UA amp pedal or a Quad Cortex? I know the price difference is huge, but when you say it's the best modeler you've ever used- I don't know what you've used. I assume you've used the higher end stuff because you seem pretty accomplished and play really well, but I have no idea. Maybe you're like me, most of my experience lies in real amps and analogue gear, I'm in my 50s. The only modelers I've ever used are the big Helix floor model, the UA Lion and Knuckles, or a Headrush MX5- out of those 3 I like the UA stuff best as far as tone and feel. The Helix wasn't mine, so I didn't get to experiment with it, I just ran through 5-10 of the factory patches- didn't care for it. My friend owns it, he's never tweaked anything on it though- he just uses the factory patches- he's weird. He's older than me and he's scared his going to break something if he messes with it much. LOL- Yeah, were not the rebels we used to be.

  • In between amp and speakers?? Are you saying it’s a load box as well? Doesn’t look like it has that capacity and I’m not about to blow up my valve head with this unit. Perhaps a mistake?

  • WHAT,, CRAP AMP SIM….. Those Bassman and Deluxe Reverb sims are the WORSE Ive ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nothing like the real amps what so ever

  • Nux don't muck around when it comes to sims. I bought the MG30 a good while ago and it's now my only multistomp. There are no amps in my cabin, just a cab.
