Tapewounds sound a little TOO mellow to my ears.
Bought Squire Jazz Bass Fretless with tapes some time ago. Thought that something weird about my childhood dream. But with big relief understood that it was just strings. Changed them for flats and now it sounds great!
I’ve had tapewounds on a bass once. I hated how they felt. Switched to flats and have never looked back.

Both are fantastic for fretless bass.

Sounds like the tape wounds are more transparent to the pick-ups. Or to put it another way, the flat wounds sound like they make the pick-ups put out more power to the amp. So that makes me wonder what the tape wounds would sound like on an acoustic bass/instroment.

Tapewounds are so… Reggae-lish
Tapes do not properly ground the player. When the guy at the board runs high gain you may get that old poor ground buzz. I went to Brite Flats for that very reason. Those tapes sounded and felt so good, though.
