???? 50s vs 60s Wiring in One Les Paul?: ObsidianWire LP Vintage MKii
In this video, I demo the ObsidianWire Les Paul Vintage MKII wiring harness with my 2007 Epiphone Les Paul Standard — and put it through its paces with a wide range of tones, from clean to fuzz.
This solderless harness lets you toggle between classic 50s wiring and modern 60s wiring, per pickup. If you’re not into soldering or just want a simple way to mod your Les Paul for better tone control, this might be the best upgrade you can make.
???? What You’ll See in This Video:
✅ What is 50s vs 60s Les Paul wiring?
✅ Clean tone demos (neck & bridge)
✅ Light overdrive with the Wampler Belle
✅ Medium overdrive with the Way Huge Red Llama (25th Anniversary)
✅ Heavy distortion with the BOSS DS-1
✅ Fuzz tones with the Leprechaun FX Paddy Whacker and Hudson Broadcast
✅ My real-world thoughts on this harness and who it’s for

???? Which wiring style would YOU choose — 50s or 60s?
Let me know what your ears preferred in the demos — clean, overdrive, fuzz — did one wiring style consistently win for you?
⚙ I’m seriously impressed with how flexible this ObsidianWire MKII harness is. Being able to switch wiring styles PER pickup, without soldering, is such a game-changer.
???? Drop your favorite pedal + pickup + wiring combo in the comments — and if you’ve modded your Les Paul, I’d love to hear what you did!
???? Coming up: I try installing this in an SG (yes, I know it’s not designed for it ????), plus I’ve got their P-Bass and Jazz Bass harnesses in the queue too.
Cheers and thanks for watching!
Fifties or modern wiring makes no difference if the tone knobs are not used .
Fifties wiring : volume and tone pots in series . Modern wiring : volume and tone pots in parallel .
In parallel the tone will take off the same amount of highs , regardless the volume setting . In series the amount of highs taken off depends on the volume setting .
F.e. , 50's wiring : volume on 10 , tone on 7 , when turning the volume down , less signal reaches the tone pot , less highs are taken of , the sound "cleans up" .
Remember : if you do not use the tone pot , there is no difference between fifties and modern wiring .
Installed the same in my LP. I've been on 50s the entire time. Easy to install and hugely satisfied.
