All of them. If I'm picking just one…..we'll, it's all of them.
First
Without question, the best tone was the first album.
It's not even debatable to anyone with a modicum of intellect.
Great overview of his different tones!!! For me it is between VH 1 and 1984.
Love the tone in Unchained. To me that's what I think of as Eddie's sound just like Runnin' With the Devil, Panama and at least anothoer dozen songs off of those fist 6 records. Though his " tone" changed through them, there was something recognizable in his playing that made it recognizably Eddie's "sound" for me.
I love his tone on Balance the most. "Amsterdam" is a killer guitar riff and tone, but when I think of perfect guitar tone, I usually picture his underrated "Baluchitherium" off the Balance album. Absolutely crushing guitar on that song.
After 1984..not so much
Van Halen and Fair Warning
Brown sound definitely
First album is the best recordrd guitar tone in history.. The first time i heard him i thoughf to myself, I need that tone for me, it is perfection! I a was around Sixteen at the time, and had purchased mt first amp of distinction, a Fender metalface Twin Reverb, used of course. I used a JHD Ice Cube to get more gain. It was not bad, but it was not EVH!
Womem and Children first and 5150 are the best VH tones
Absolutely
Romeo delight
Its gotta be fair warning, then tokyo dome then balance
1984 then for unlawful for me
1984
My favorite tone from the Hagar era was off the FUCK album, and my favorite tone from the Roth era is either the firts album or 1984. My all time favorite that Ed used the tone he used when they played in the West End Marketplace in Dallas, Texas in 1986?
If a person cannot instantly answer that his best tone, accuracy, intensity and overall sound is from the fair warning album, then that person knows nada about eddie, van halen and music! Simple.
The fair warning sound is what every guitar player strives for. And to this day it is still rarely perfectly imitated.
Van Halen Van Halen tone is my fav
First album rocked
Yes. You nailed it. Nothing compares to it's raw feel. I basically never listened to VH after 1984, yet they were my favorite band and the very reason I started playing.
Fairwarning VH 1,2 ,women children first ,Diver down,84..He'll ANY Eddie tone rocked
Fair warning vh1 vh2 1984 and for unlawful carnal knowledge have always been the best in my eyes but literally every single Van Halen album besides vh3 has just kick ass tone
Fair warning vh1 vh2 1984 and for unlawful carnal knowledge have always been the best in my eyes but literally every single Van Halen album besides vh3 has just kick ass tone
5150
Debut album the best
Fair Warning has my vote.
All coming from Eddies fingers and you can always tell its him no matter the sound. Alot of players have said Eddie picked up their guitar and through their rig set-up, and it still sounded like Eddie when he played.
That Fair Warning tone is IT for me!
VH1, VH2, Fair Warning, 1984, Live Without a Net (more polished 5150), OU812 (and it's live promotion in 1989), F.U.C.K., Live Right Here Right Now, Balance.
Eddie never had such a bad tone
The first Van Halen album has some awesome tones.
Van Halen II doesn't get much love but I think that was great tone. D.O.A. is a good example. Women and Children First is pretty killer as well. I just wish the overall recording of the album was better. Ed's guitar gets buried in the mix. He obviously experimented a lot with mic placement.
Any tone before 5150 I’ll take. From 5150 on his tone is trash.
I totally agree. Great songs the entire album. First concert by luck happened to be VH opening for Sabbath. Magical night and show. There was no doubt a monster had arrived.
The Brown Sound belongs to Alex , not Eddie. Dipshit
VH 1 all day, everyday for me:)
2nd place… Fair Warning 🙂
Original is always the best
He’s had a lot of great tones over the years but my personal favorite is what he used on Balance. It was thick, but very clear and harmonically rich. I’ve got a pretty good replica of it on my Headrush and it sounds amazing.
1rst album
I like them all. I think Eddie needed to experiment with different sounds to bring out his full creativity. If he'd never changed sound, his music would have stagnated.
First album! But I also really enjoy his tone from later albums????
First 3 albums were great with great tone, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it
VH 1 By far !!!!!
I recently rediscovered "Little Dreamer" (for tone, not the song)
Changes….that is an amazing riff, vibrant, intense….iconic Van Halen!!!
