I think Pantera were really the last big leap in metal. Metallica and other early thrash bands invented modern heavy metal as opposed to slow bluesy Black Sabbath stuff and British New Wave metal like Iron Metal. Pantera was like Metallica but even heavier, and with that southern red neck vibe. They didn’t write as many good songs as 80’s Metallica, but Cowboys From Hell and Vulgar Display of Power are classic, and Far Beyond Driven is also good. But yeah, now it’s all about just mashing different already-established styles together like shoegaze metal. I guess Djent would be an evolution but I don’t really like it or think it’s all that different aside from maybe a million different time changes to show off. Gojira is great though. I don’t know where this comment is going or how it got here so yeah. Some thoughts is all.
Acid Bath had alot to do with Panteras sound, including Phils Vocals.. Dax Riggs was an influence on Phil when he was in Down !
