The mysteries of tone construction and finding one’s sound can bedevil guitarists throughout their entire careers. It seems players are always on a quest to improve their voice. In this video, maestro Steve Vai offers some tips to help your sonic journey become less fraught and more productive.
“What your fingers are searching for is the way you’re hearing yourself,” counsels Vai. “It starts in the head, and it has to come out in the fingers. The tone of a note has many moving parts to it. There’s where you hit the string, the angle of your pick, how hard you hold the pick and all of these things. You get to a point where you know good tone when you hear it, and then the work starts. Your ears have to be the police of your technique. You are the boss of the tone.”

You and Satriani are my biggest inspirations
할부지들어가
Mr. Vai even when he speaks you can feel the wisdom comes out of his mouth. This man is a delightful to hearing him. He should have a radio station.
" You're the Boss of the Tone" awesome!!
Ahhhh please never die stevie…
My Hero ~
STEVE!!! Thanks for this! I always thought tone was in the hairbrush! Much Love.
“Your the boss of the tone” the master has spoken! Now we ride!
Amazing
Anyone else notice the crack in Steve's guitar at 3:32 right where the neck and body meet? Great video!!
this is brutal, can some ordinary monkey trying to play guitar apprehend all this. this is very much frustrating.
Funny he mentions Yngwie, I think he had horrible tone back then, not sure about now. Rising Force sounds terrible to me, maybe it's just the engineering on that album though. What a mess. I remember being blown away when he hit the scene though and he's done some amazing things…I mean duh, he's an astounding guitarist. I freaked out when I first heard and saw him.
Thanks for the help always appreciate it❤❤
????????????????????
Legend
Tone is in the hands 100% – I got mine by playing electric guitar unplugged, so I could figure out resonance and sustain independently – I sure wish I had Steve Vai in my neighborhood to teach me more tho
Jack Butler. He has been the guy for 40 years plus.
Not only an amazing musician, but an amazing teacher and an amazing person. A role model for everyone.
Thank u Dr. Vai sir
????????????
Steve is literally just such a cool guy
Thanks Steve, the GOAT.
the tone is the instrument as created not designed as intended. elsewise, its style or adaptation to the instrument as intended for design and creation. see? shit body equates to shit resonance.
Steve vai best electric guitar player of all time!!! Legend!!!!❤❤❤❤
Steve Vai playing so bad. I'm joking, a legend with a infinite creativity ❤❤
I still remember the first time I saw Steve perform with Zappa when he was 19 and was blown away by, of course, his chops, but even more by his ability to effortless play the written parts to the tune that Zappa himself didn't play. He has been a true genius of the guitar for a long time and, yes, he gets some great tones. I really liked how he explained everything.
Oh, another murican channel to boycott 😉
Steve needs to get on that Swedish Carnivore diet that Yngwie is on , I cant bear to see Vai with such short hair ???? he needs to get it back ????
The best????????Steve vai
The master of guitar
What’s that heavily modded JEM? Whats going on there? Sustainer? Sustainer and….?!!!
He has his own sound, as far as someone like acdc it's raw feeling and attitude in fingers,I like steve but I always preferred the few effects pedals and just a clear raw power.
Shacth vai MAB
Guitar tone mostly come with your hands. Guitar pro copycat player even dont know that.
Ear police , ha ha , I love that. Ive been know to violate a chord or 2 in my day. I think my ear police are paid off sometimes.
Tone is in the hand, a great player will sound great with a cheap guitar and a dull amp
Steve Vai’s playing is nothing short of a transcendental phenomenon—a musical dimension that goes far beyond ordinary guitar performance. Although I am a classical guitarist myself, I find immense inspiration in the way Vai commands the electric guitar. In his hands, the instrument is not merely a tool but an extension of his very being, through which he communicates with astonishing expressiveness, boundless creativity, and technical perfection.
What Steve Vai does is not just virtuosity; it is an entire universe where he constantly pushes the boundaries of music. His playing blends the highest level of technical precision with deep emotion, classical harmonic thinking with modern rock and avant-garde elements. Every note he plays is part of a meticulously crafted story, where delicate lyricism and explosive energy coexist in perfect harmony.
For a classical guitarist, Vai’s artistry is particularly inspiring because it highlights the fact that guitar playing is not confined to specific styles—it is a universal language capable of bridging vastly different musical worlds. Classical technique and musical thinking provide a solid foundation for appreciating his breathtaking melodic lines, modulations, and dynamic contrasts. Furthermore, Vai himself has acknowledged the influence of classical music on his compositions, making it especially exciting for a classical guitarist to discover the subtle nuances where these influences shine through.
Ultimately, Steve Vai is not just a guitar virtuoso but a true musical alchemist, opening new dimensions with every note he plays. Whether it’s through technical brilliance, the exploration of unconventional sounds, or mesmerizing melodies, his music is always a journey—one that serves as an inexhaustible source of inspiration for any guitarist. ????❤
tone is in the fingers
I used to struggle playing lead solos ,….just using a pick at all ,..I went about a month and stopped using a pick at all …I found I was pressing my fingers ( thumb and index finger) exactly like I still had a pick ,…but my index finger nail was hitting the strings just as the pick used to ,….that way when I alternate into tapping I don’t have to do magic tricks holding a useless pick in my hand ,..then re grabbing and positioning it . I admit that you’ll still need a pick for certain rhythmic playing like lightning fast thrash picking …it freed me however / as far getting the same tone from a pick and without it ….and no more magic ???? tricks having to maneuver a pick in my hand when I don’t use it .
Remove Tone Pots from all guitar.. cause " Tone on your hands "
Crossroads, 1986
My tone sucks
GOAT!!!!
Listen everyone- there are SO many sage words here.
You're the boss of the tone – Steve Vai 2025
I just watched the Rick Beato interview with Steve and Joe Satriani. I highly recommend you watch it after you watch this. It's really quite an amazing story.
I don't know all of Steve's work. And its early here. What was he playing at the end?
"You are the Tone"
