  • Love this…I recently figured this out on my own but wished I would have seen your video earlier as it would have made my life a lot easier. I would like to share another technique that may even make it easier for players that aren't at ease with the full melodic minor scale in 5 positions. Considering many of us know our 5 pentatonic shapes across the neck, we can play the Major Pentatonic scale and just flat the third instead of the full melodic minor scale because the full scale may be overwhelming for many of us especially in 5 positions. Example: C7b13…Instead of learning and playing F Melodic minor, play Fmajor pentatonic instead but flatten the 3rd. Do this for all shapes. Example2: C7#11…Instead of learning and playing G Melodic minor, instead play G major pentatonic but flatten the 3rd. Do this for all shapes. Its a quick way to get around the fretboard as long as we know our major pentatonic scale. NOTE: every once in a while I will use my ear to throw the major 7th in because it will be needed to cover extensions like the #11. If you feel there is any value in this, please make a video because you are a great teacher and player.
