  • I like brighter notes in the Cedar for fingerstyle. But i would prefer a Ardirondack top and Cocobolo sides and back with a rosewood neck.

  • Mahogany is a bit hollow and cedar more rounded and clear. All personal preference but cedar sounds better imo

  • Honestly, mahogany is not an option from most manufacturers. Lefty’s certainly wouldn’t have much in the way of choice at all. Spruce & Cedar tops deserve attention for tone, but backs and sides whether they are rosewood, koa, mahogany, or even Taylor urban bark matter little because they all support the resonation of a quality top. Responsible build from reputable manufacturer & proper care of one’s investment is what matters . I feel for the uninformed beginner these days.

  • Love your videos. Struggling on two I am considering, your thoughts if you could. Orangewood Morgan Verses Fender cc60s. Both mahogany with electronics. Thx

  • Thanks for this. To me, cedar wins 100-0. Mahogany sounded dull, boxed-in, shy and non-expressive. Cedar sounded darker and brighter at the same time, more melancholic.

  • I prefer both. I am a "Tone Chaser" It depends on what tone you are looking for with what you are doing……. Anyone else with me?

  • They both sound great. Phil McKnight's Orangewood demo is great too. Mahogany wins to me. Darrell's review is AWESOME!

  • Darrell, Are you able to do a tone comparison between Richlite and Mahogany fretboards. There doesn’t seem to be anything available on YouTube.

  • Agree "massive" yet my ear is so forgiving in the sense that it makes no difference to me which I prefer. I suppose it would depend on how it mixes with other instruments . Plus so much depends on pick used, which side of the pick is used, attack, string choice. If I had to make a choice I enjoyed the Cedar crispness slightly more though in general I love warm lazy fuzzy low fi quality more. Brings me back to remember to try and be happy have with what you've got.

  • Hi! I have a classic nylon strings guitar made all from red cedar. how does it works having cedar for back and sides as well as for the top?

  • I'm a cedar guy. So I bring that bias to this comparison. Both guitars sound too new. But the cedar had more of a range of time than the mahogony. So for me it's much better.

  • If you're going to get a mahogany at this price point…you're better of buying a yamaha 850. I was not impressed at all with organgewood.

  • 3:05 guitar sound is special because I heard that song, but it's a challenge to time it and to pick correct chords. After having economic guitar experience should upgrade to a higher tier.

  • My Norman Cedar has way better dynamics than my Mahogany Martin. Cedar provides way more emotional expression and nuance IMO

  • just a slight difference between the two. I prefer the cedar guitar it has a surround sound. i love it. i want to buy a quality guitar but so expensive here in the Philippines.

  • I like the look and sound of the Mahogany. I always listen to a Darrell review before buying a guitar. He sold me on my Firefly 338.

  • I've had my eye on Orangewood. But right now holding out for a Rosewood guitar with fancy abalone inlays. Trying to find one.

  • A well built mahogany guitar like Guild made in 1977 sounds much better. Of course, all Guild guitars sound great. I just prefer the Guild mahogany's tone. It reached out and grabbed people when I was performing on stage.

  • Great comparison! I'm more into classical guitars and talking of them I prefer the mahogany ones, meanwhile the cedar wins on the metal stringed instrument for me, which I didn't expect at all. Apparently the nylon strings and mahogany suit each other very well, producing that magical warm sound, and the metal strings go better with the cedar making the guitar sound so vibrant and lively, but that's just my opinion for sure.
Thank you for this interesting video!
