Fender ’68 Vibro Champ Amplifier Review – Why I Purchased it
This is why I purchased the Fender Vibro Champ Reverb Amplifier. The new Vibro Champ is part of Fender’s ’68 Custom Series. This might be the greatest small tube amplifier ever! I have raved about the Bugera V5 Infinium; this destroys it! This is easily the most fun I’ve had playing a 5-watt amplifier in years. This might be the best 5-watt tube amp on the market.

I’m sure these are wonderful amps. However, I don’t think they are that good that I need to spend that much $$ to add it to my current amp collection. If I didn’t have a guitar amp I might consider buying one. I have listened to many live guitar players using solid state amps and they have a full set of great sounds. Maybe I didn’t get bit by the tube amp bug yet.
For $900? No thanks.
Hi!
Do you might have any suggestions for dirt/boost pedals to use with this amp?
I can’t crank it at home
This is an amazing 650$ amp…..for 1,000$
Way too small. For not much more, you can get a far better Blues Deluxe amp.
You are one of my favorite online reviewers. The amp sounds great here.. but I hav a question. I had a 68 Custom deluxe reverb and really wanted to like it. but it was noisy – and looking online this was a bit issue for that amp. Does the Vibro Champ suffer from that negative feedback noise as well. ??
Roll back your tone too much ice pick
It's not a full valve amp. Stop the BS. No rectifier, no tube driven reverb.
I’m gonna buy one now! Thanks
New subscriber here. I find your playing style very inspiring, as I'm new player (left handed as well) trying to get better. Looking to get my first amp and this one has come to my attention. Are you still happy with it? What do the speed & intensity knobs specifically control? Thanks!
For all the people complaining about the price of $900., have you priced anything else? This is the best deal, and best sounding small tube amp out there. Welcome to the wonderful world of inflation and corporate greed.
Is that the artist 12W amp in the background? It or the artist tweed tone couldn't do the job you're wanting from this amp? I'm asking because I'm tossing up all these amps, even the 5w artist tube amp that I've seen secondhand in Australia for $150!
Hard to believe it’s a 10 inch speaker, sounds so big
Sounds beautiful. Bit Exxy but.
I wanted a small tube amp but I can get a good, feature rich, solid state that is wireless and has session mode and all of the goodies for 600. (Boss Katana Air Ex)
I just got one but it gives off so much feedback when you turn up the reverb. Very strange and annoying
Do you like this amp better than the fender Princeton tone master.
Beautiful demo and playing. Thank you sir. Think I'm gonna pick on of these up for rec and smaller gigs.
Not even a genuine Spring Reverb ?? Wtf Fender?? This is double the price of my blues junior, and the blues jr DOES have a genuine Fender SPRING reverb. And it sounds much better for it!! Ha ????
Been without an amp for maybe 2 years. But feel like this could be ideal and acceptable to have back in tbe house
For that price it should have a G10 Gold
My future amp ! Your first riff is just wonderfull !
Hello, I follow you since a very long time maybe from your beguining time. Sorry for my English i'm French. So with your advices and test i have bought has you have done the peavey delta blues which i still have. And i do not regret at all itls a wonderfull amp and yes i have made the same modification as you for the reverb to put some foam under to reduce his noize. But now my tubes amp are dead and i have the same problem of neighbor as you ???? So i'm looking this time for a smaller tube amp. I was thinking of this fender vibro and also the laney Studio 5L but the head and at least fir the lasts amp loudpedal lionheart bcc 60w again from laney . So the question is have you tested this amp ? Because i have seen that it's very, but very, versatil and with the same connexion output as the marshall dsl 20 but a little bit better in fact. I hope to read you soon because i need to buy one new little tube amp. So i am waiting for your new advices to buy my new one as i have done before musicaly René ????????
Am I imagining it or was there not a follow up video where you said you returned this amp because of a noise issue you could not sort out? Was the reason I ended up not buying it ????
why not a real deal 70s Vibrochamp?
I really prefer the sounds of analog reverbs and I have huge reverb spring tank pedal for this purpose. How would that sound with this amp, putting the pedal in the front?
I want one ????
I dont know how people complain about the speaker. Honestly, I've had Princetons with upgraded speakers, and i could only hear a very minimal difference.
Even at 5 watts, this thing can get loud. The sparkle cleans are beautiful, and the digital reverb and tube tremolo sound aweome.
The bottom line is for 1k , its definitely worth it
Is it point-to-point?
Seems to Break up pretty early
@intheblues, Hi Shane after watching your review and a few others I went to try out a 68 custom vibro champ too with a strat and sg standard as well as compared it to a blues junior tweed Ltd. The blues junior sounded a bit fizzy and too loud for home or bedroom to be played quietly but man that 68 vibro champ had a nice clean and an even better grind especially with a few overdrive pedals in front. Sounds so good with my Gibson Sg Standard 61 as well as my Strat. I've got an EHX reverb pedal and compared that to the vibro champ and all I can say Fender did a very nice job with their digital reverb which sounds way better than my Ehx. Also love that the cabinet is made from Birch plywood unlike the blues juniors chipboard. I can't belive how good this thing sounds turned up ????
Ps: Also tried the 68 custom Princton reverb which sounded very bassy and too loud turned up for home, however that little 68 vibro champ had that magic mojo ingredients in my opinion, even the guy in the shop said the same thing
the beginning sounds great, but the headroom is probably too small for useable spanky/punchy "real" clean sounds (for country)…
and 4:28 is the infamous very ugly/farty "Fender crunch"….unbearable especially for a Marshall breakup/crunch guy
Hi Shane, TY for the review. This amp sounds great. How would you compare it to the AC4 as a pedal platform for bedroom volumes? I love the AC for that Vox chime, but it's not so good with pedals IMO. Hoping the Vibro breaks up later and thus maybe a little more pedal friendly.
Do you still own this Shane? I’m going to buy one and interested if you still think it’s a killer amp? ????
How would you rate this vs the Tone Master Princeton?
I’d love to see a long term review of this amp.
I played one of these in a shop whilst looking for a new guitar. I was so close to just walking out with this amp and forgetting about the guitar. It sounded incredible.
Nice
Hi Shane! Love your review of the 57 custom Tweed champ. Which do you prefer in the studio?
I had an original Vibro Champ in mint condition, sounded like a dream mmm. I let my brother borrow it and he lost it in a storage locker. I’m still passed about it! He should buy me this!
That does sound pretty great for what it is. What's the other mic you're using next to the 57?
He’s right. I found one on sale for $725. It’s surprisingly good. It’s definitely a keeper.
Hey Shane I read in a comment you sent it back because of rattle. Is that true?
Did you know why it rattled?
I bought this amp, and immediately one of the preamp tubes failed, and caused the tremolo to behave very weirdly.. White noise at each cycle and crackles, volume drops…
I changed it and that was fixed.
But.. Very quickly it started to rattle.. I found out the power section tube 6V6 was microphonic and vibrating like crazy.
Changed it and everything was solved.
I discovered many owners had the same problem. So Fender seem to put very low grade tubes in these amps.
Wow wonder what decible levels it gets to when you crank it to 8 and above
Thank you—that could be nearly perfect.
For another variety of sound from this amp, turn Treble and Bass OFF (maybe treble at 2), It gives the amp a nice thick full sound, great with pedals, great for modern rock! Note: for clean sound it might help to envision switching from a bright Taylor acoustic to a mahogany acoustic, darker yet rich tone.
