This is a look at the gift from Marshall to the everyday player, the Class 5!
It is a class A tube combo with a 10” speaker and kicks out 96db of SPL. Loud enough to practice, gig and record and easy to attain the sweet spot that we love on our vintage tube amps!

Greetings from Barnsley…I have to agree this amp ( the mrk2 one where they sorted the rattles) is a fantastic amp…I literally stumbled on my class 5 by accident…im a old git of 58 and when I played in bands and gigged I used either a Vox AC30 or an old Marshall bluesbreaker style amp….or a Roland jazz chorus….not all at once lol…i only played pubs and even then a vox was overkill tbf ( I've had other ampss like a fender twin and a Peavey Classic..now that's one amp I REALLY should had kept..bought it cheap…sold it cheap WTF!!! ..and a Peavey 5150 etc )…so I decided as I'd sold them when I stopped been in bands that I fancied having miniature version of my 3 favourites …kinda same sound .
And to be fair looks…but smaller ..so I got a Vox AC4-12….looks cool extremely basic…but with that top boost channel…I got a Roland jazz Jc22 …which is a mini jazz chorus…now I needed my paul weller amp…yeah I know clapton etc but to me the Marshall bluesbreaker was a paul weller amp…lol…on Ebay I stumbled on a Marshall class 5 it looked the part…it was about £300 BUT it said it was RAT modded…I didn't know what that was…but I took a gamble…ive been singing the praises of RAT modded amps since…basically it's a Marshall class 5 pimped out with Reverb…some kind of power break…tbf too many things to mention…now the electronic wizard …hes like a British Dumble man!!!.
that did this has retired sadly..but as he is largely a unsung genius (probably as no "name " player has used his products ) so you still see the odd one up on Reverb and Ebay…my advice is if your a fan of the class 5…buy them…they're still relatively affordable…theres the RAT website for info on Andy Dokkens work…theres also some YouTube clips of one in action that and I hate to say it doesn't really hardly do it justice as the guy doesn't seem that good player ( i know i hate to be a asshole) and it's very poorly recorded …anyways nice to see this amp getting some love…and yes it looks absolutely fantastic and is MADE IN BRITAIN…mind you my Vox AC4-12 is made in China and is super well made and reliable
..I left it on for a week by accident when I went on holiday…and it still works fine…something my original 60s one certainly wouldn't be able to handle lol…still it's nice that once you could get a brilliant British legendary amp at an reasonable cost without having to sell a kidney or be a plumber..lol
The clean sound is because Marshall based his first amp on the Fender Bassman
The clean sound of Marshall amps is often overlooked in many player’s quest for crunch and lead sounds. I’ve not owned any Marshall amps (but there’s still time) because Fenders have just been my
go-to as a great pedal platform. However, I’ve played a few DSL’s whose cleans surprised me and I also knew a guy in the late 90’s in a touring Top 40 cover band who played a Strat through either an 800 or 900 head and 412 cab and I was quite surprised and impressed by how smooth, tight and balanced his clean sounds were when their band came through town.
Although I actually have plenty of tube amps already and most often gig with digital modeling direct to the PA these days, I might need to look into one of these little numbers…just because…
No Master Volume No Deal
Had a head and combo at one point and felt they benefitted from a 12" speaker. Eventually sold them both and got a Marshall Studio Vintage which sounds fantastic. No regrets over selling the Class 5 although I liked them at the time. Prefer the Studio Vintage for gigs and the 50th anniversary 1 watt heads for home use – great for cranking at low volume, no pedals required!
Brown sound wasn’t so much a result of any particular modification…but rather the combining of a dying plexi with a variac….
What a fantastic video as always have a good day also happy first week of July from Canada ❤????
I have a Marshall Class 5 head and 2 Marshall c-10 cabs.Definitely Marshall crunch sound on a budget.2 reasons I bought it,#1 Made in England,#2 basic tone stack, nothing added to compromise it’s intended design-a straight wire with gain.Have yet to turn mine up past half as even at half volume it’s seriously loud.
Great recording amp, especially at low volume. I don’t understand why so many hate it.
Bought the 3rd incarnation of this amp as it came out(2011? 2014?). The 3rd/last version had a lower power switch incorporated into the headphone switch, a three piece back and the valves pointing downwards for easier changing. I think they sound great clean and it is possible to get a great valve overdrive going on. Put a Valetone gp 5 in front of it and you can do pretty much anything.
I love my Marshall code 50 and 100h. I can get all the amps I want.
Have a Class 5 head, and had a combo. The head into a 4×12 is fantastic for classic crunch, and has a killer clean sound into an open back 2×12.
Plus, its freakin cute
I just couldn't bond with mine and ended up selling it. Sounded small.
Laney 5 wt lionheart
Gen x here, I have to disagree with 90% of what you said in this vid. Marshall cleans sucked! Thats why I and most everyone else gigged with a Marshall and a fender, the fender was the clean sound and Marshall handled the overdrive. Anything solid state stayed ‘mostly’ in the bedroom. Now that Marshall have sold out to overseas, Marshall is dead to me. Just my opinion and I appreciate your video.
I’ve been absolutely delighted playing through an ION Bluetooth speaker at home. With an eight inch speaker it is loud enough to piss of my wife and kids. Running through the microphone input you get duel volume control so it actually breaks up nicely with the mic volume cranked????
Have 2 class 5 combos white red great amps for pedals perfect for bedroom. iommic life complete
Ihad one. Great sound, but the rattle inside made me sell it
I never gelled with it as it was too tubby and squashy for me.The El84 is why.El34 is my choice. The Studio Series SV20 is awesome.JCM800 had a great clean.
Your still a “ lad”
I had one years ago thought it was rubbish and the construction circuit wise very poor.
Great things can be achieved with a Class 5 and an overdrive pedal… Love mine… A V2 SE white combo with block Marshall lettering
I've got one with the open back with the metal piece!❤
Yeah I tried one years ago……terrible amp!
It's a cool amp. I guess some other alternatives, if you stretch the budget a little, is a Marshall Origin 20 head (£240-280). If you have a cab. Or, in this price bracket, a Vox AC4 combo is cheaper. But those are more limited/specific/small. Or maybe a second-hand AC10C1 also around £240-280 too could be more versatile. New, the Harley Benton Tube 15 has a kind of nice dirtier Fender/Laney Cub sound, and I think spring reverb and a 1×12. Could be too loud for some uses though. Speaking of Laney, not sure what Laney LC15/LC15R sell for now, but they used to be very cheap, maybe £100-150ish? Those have a nice open clean tone too, great with pedals. Similar with the solidstate Vox Pathfinder 15/15R, also around £100+. But the Vox, Harley Benton and Laney don't sound like a Marshall. There's the solidstate Marshalls too, like the 8100 VS which sounds kinda gnarly, but probably looking at £250-300.
Used mine not miked up live in a small venue at full tilt… rattles like a bitch, but it is lovely, dark sounding clean. With a green back it’s perfect
I had the limited edition Guitar Center version with the original 1962 Marshall logo.
One thing I remember about it was having to roll off the bass to get more clarity when overdriven.
lol I hated the way mine sounded. Dreadful amp.
I have a collection of low watt amps, five of them are Marshalls. An original, unmodified BRG Class 5, a DSL5C, an Origin 5, and a DSL1HR & DSL1CR. I enjoy them all.
To my ears, my Fender Bassbreaker 007 FSR Tweed with a 10" Greenback and a treble boost is a Bluesbreaker in a Bassman box LOL
You have to upgrade the speaker and All the tubes…. I recommend Soviet (Tsung Sol or Sovtek will work great)
ive upgraded one with good results, swapped the speaker to a 10" greenback and v1 to nos mullard, enjoy!
Yeah that's a cool amp , class A……
I have a 2 watt emery micro baby… One pre amp tube, 1 power tube, and one rectifier tube, all interchangeable……..through celestion alnico blue, in custom diffused pine cabinet, I use the cabinet for other higher gain amplifiers….
I sold mine…..EASILY ONE OF THE BIGGEST MISTAKES IN MY LIFE! ????
Great jamming -; Marshall rules – attenuators are cheap and were mechanical
A jvm 210 100 watt head with a jvm 2×12 cab, amazing tones overdrive and cleans all volumes including whisper bedroom volumes.
I have a Class 5 head and it's a GREAT amp.
My Tonex sounds much better than this, is cheaper, and has many many rigs in it. Pair it with Tonex cab and you need to have your head checked if you are wasting money on this stuff. It doesn't make any sense
I re wired mine to a jcm 800.
I have the mark one
These little amps are truly a gift, just as you say. Simple things are the best. Turn the guitar down, it's perfect for the quiet bits, turn it up and snarles, and sings.
Wow that's pretty. I'd love to try my Gretsch in it
I regret selling mine. I needed that cash at the time. I’ve been looking for some and it seems like the prices went up lol
The Class 5 combo is poorly designed.
If you want a Class 5?
Get the head version.
That is a really nice clean tone.
Loved those sounds, great playing too.
And yes, the myth was always that You can't get a decent clean sound out of Marshall. But those tones You demoed are amazing!
But for what I can muster in a brief search those amps are not that easy to get a hold of nowadays…
How do You find them?
R u swapping out valves without biasing .. ??
I have a DSL5cr, with a celestion g-10 creamback. It sounds amazing.
Not sure how the clean channel compares to the class 5 but I assume they’re at least similar. Clean channel is the best part of my amp! To me it can sound Voxxy or it can sound like a driven black panel fender. Pedals work really well
I've used a JCM900 since 91… the cleans are great…
I do mean great too, not just ok and useable…
Turn down the guitar, add a bit of input signal via boost/compressor and/or low gain OD and run the pre's ate 3 to 5 and the output at 5.5/6.5
The Class 5 is still a bit loud for home volume.
Should have been a 12 inch speaker.
