  • Hey Hovak,
It's really beautiful to see your relationship with your daughter. You obviously put a lot of thought buying her first serious bass, and upgrading it. How did you choose that pickup?
More importantly, how did you help Ellen blossom her talent so well?
I have a 5 month old daughter, and I hope to have a great relationship with her too.

  • I love Ellen’s videos. It would have been great to hear her play the Kala U-Bass. Perhaps she can do a video on that.

  • Please ask Ellen to make a video of her playing the bassline to the O'Jays' song 'For the Love of Money'.????????

  • Hi Hovak and Ellen, thanks for making this video! I've been playing bass for about 50 years and am looking at getting a short scale 4-string bass. Ellen, I'm wondering which bass guitars in the video are your two favorites. I'm going to guess #1 is the Stingray, with the Mayones coming in #2. Cheers from San Francisco!

  • his fingers were use to playing a 6 string guitar and the hofner was easier to play because of the skinny neck

  • The Höfner 500/1 Violin Bass Guitar will always be my baby, regardless if there are other bass guitars out there that sound better than it (it probably would have fallen into obscurity if it hadn't been for Paul McCartney) since I just love the way the guitar looks. It reminds me of a large violin or viola. Or a small cello.

  • Man I have sons that are musicians, no daughter, you must be so proud of her.
I like the purple one best
Oh so when I was in Goa a British guitar builder built a violin bass from scratch for my brothers bass player, he worked on the beach. Even wound the 0:27 pickups
Her bass playing skills are extreme
Ellen is just an amazing bass player, I can’t say that enough

The name "lipstick pickup" comes from the fact that the pickup is encased in a lipstick tube. The design was created by electric guitar innovator Nathan Daniel, who founded the Danelectro company in 1947.

    Explanation

Daniel bought surplus lipstick tubes from a women's cosmetic manufacturer.

He used the tubes to house a simple pickup made of a bar magnet wrapped in copper wire.

The pickup was then dipped in wax or lacquer and stuffed into the tube.

A metal bracket was attached so the pickup could be mounted inside the guitar.

  • The BITE bass is not 360€ at all… That's the price of the short scale option you add to ~1 800€ for the bass :')

  • The HB for 89 bucks sounds incredible. Great Beginner Bass. Might want to check out the Marcus Miller Sire U5 as well. IMHO one of the best short scale basses around 500.

  • I own a Warwick Corvette Rockbass shortscale, I am very happy with it, short scale basses have their own charm

  • He bought it in a shop because he was self conscious About playing a bass upside down due to him being a lefty. He felt silly playing a bass up side down and got the Hofner because it was semetrical

  • Emediatly plays the most iconic baselines ever ????the thing with the cheaper bass is it’s almost certain that they will need fret work( the frets can be sharp) have cheap plastic nut, poor quality tuners.. will need a setup.. after having a guitar tech go over it, it will play ok..

  • I actually bought my very first short scale bass this August/September or whatever: A red Danelectro Longhorn with "f-holes". Amazingly fun to play in my couch compared to my old and heavy 1984 Yamaha BB2000, despite the latter being an instrument on a totally different level. But would also love to have that Glarry (ridiculously cheap) or the cool Gibson bass as well. As a small acoustic that Kala is really tempting too. Keep up the good work, Ellen (and dad). It's always a true joy watching your videos. Your musicianship is truly amazing for your age, and us older folks probably will prolong our lives a week or so watching your videos lol.
