The undisputed King of the heavy metal riff, Terence ‘Geezer’ Butler has done it all when it comes to the bass guitar. Before bands like Metallica, Slipknot and Rage Against the Machine – before the term “heavy metal” even existed – Black Sabbath’s colossal riffs and pure power set metal’s mood. In today’s video, we’re breaking down some of his mightiest bass riffs. You’ll learn legendary licks from Paranoid, War Pigs, and more!

Type-O Negative
This was really wholesome ???? I love the format. And I also love Black Sabbath. I think you two have inspired me to dust of the old bass ????
I'm a guitar player but I've always had a bass kicking around. Any guitar player who loves Sabbath should learn War Pigs and NIB for sure. Junior's Eyes is another personal favorite of mine . I'm not sure but I heard Geezer played the intro on a Ric.
Thanks for the video very nice ????
Why is Ozzy the thumbnail?? Not a good foot to get off on.
Something you've missed that is key about Geezer's early sound is he plucked the strings over the neck, even around the 14th fret. *OK, so this did get noticed in passing.
The solo bass (can anyone think of another solo bass piece in Rock music before this?) that precedes NIB is called Bassically. Get it?
No mention of his soloing prowess, which was SOP for him in the early years while Tony Iommi was doing his solos. And the choice of tunes gives the false impression that all he does is double the guitar riff. I think he did it less than his contemporaries in Hard Rock/early Heavy Metal.
Their tuning was C#
Good entertainment. Just being picky but most people dont play the correct tones on the last two notes. You have not as well! Sabbath sneaking that cool shit into their genuis
Thanks for picking "Juniors Eyes" one of my favourite Sabbath tracks. Channels a lot of Can in the verses.
???? jam the old man can ????
The joy y'all have is so contagious and fun it makes me want to play everytime! But we need to talk – seriously lol please insert a joke about bass players not knowing keys cause Iron Man IS in E – it just doesn't lead off the root! ???? Best part is that no other bassist in the comments noticed it either so um, not saying, just saying…. ???????????? (I would also like to nominate Colin Moulding from XTC as perhaps THE most unsung bass hero of our era – if not familiar pls check out: Respectable Street, Travels in Nineveh, Melt the Guns, Rocket From a Bottle, Living through another Cuba, Burning With Optimism's Flame, No Thugs in Our House – actually most anything of Black Sea and English settlement – you seriously could do three or four sessions on this guys work but his sense of melody and phrasing are perfection!)
You gotta do one with Steve DiGorgio from Testament!! Total bass bad ass!!
Time for a Derek Smalls episode!
My favorite Bass is my California G&L L2000 my wife surprised me with along time back. Flat black is sick on it that for sure
Bill Ward played on Heaven And Hell not Vinnie Appice.
Bill Ward was still in the band for the Heaven and Hell album.
He used round wounds but they were just dead
Can't believe you didn't know Iron Man was in B.
You guys forgot Under the sun. That's a challenging bass part right there.❤
A pedal named after a danish astronomer… What?!
SBL: In general I love ur podcasts, but I find ur feigned enthusiasm and barely disguised contempt for rock and punk music genres off-putting and elitist. I'm a post-bop player, but enjoy all types of music. Maybe you should develop a broader appreciation music or stop profiting from genres u hold in contempt.
Junior's Eyes was Glenn Hughes' old Ric bass…..it was on the tour…
How about analysing Bob Daisley bass lines. Not only an incredible bassist but an incredible lyricist too. He wrote all of Ozzy's classic albums and arrangements. Look him up. ????
Fantastic listening from Sharon.
????????
Should've had her learn the baseline for the solo during warpigs or any jam section of Sabbath songs. Not the easy riffs we all learn when we first get into Black Sabbath at 8.
Geezer didn't use Orange amps. He and Tony used Laneys at the time. They only used Oranges when they did the Beat Club in 1970.
Sabbath is everything
Up up up
NO INTO THE VOID????
Would love to see you guys do a video like this with Dennis Dunaway (original Alice Cooper group)
Then black sabbath played their last concert, back to the beginning last week.
Bill Ward was on "Heaven And Hell".
"Lady Evil" is my favourite Geezer bass pert.

I mean, it'd be great to see her try to learn Brothers Johnson basslines. Maybe its already happened and i havent seen it, but hell, thatd be great.
1:07 I think it’s sacrilege that you didnt show how that man plays, I wish to achieve that as a bassist influenced by Geezer too.
I also applauded Sharon ar the end of this vid. A new sub here. Will follow her too. ????????
