  • The fizzy sound seems to bea problem of the 70 80 speaker. I own the dsl20 hr with a vox bc112 cabinet with a celestion v-type speaker and it sounds great at 10 wats for practice. I swapped the speaker on a different am too from a 70 80 to a v-type which had the same issue of sounding fuzzy.

  • I have the 5w, and IMO it's the perfect home practice amp. Pair with a Pod Go, and you'll never need anything else

  • I used a DSL40CR in an apartment for a while. Now I play a 100w Friedman BE-DLX in a condo with shared walls.

    Am I an asshole?

  • Not having the gain stage between the classic gain and the ultra gain is a real bummer. I had an old 40dsl at one point, that was my favorite setting. Now I have this amp having sold my 5w to get it, not really worth it. Should have just gotten another 40 with an attenuator.

  • I found it mediocre. For just practice, if you don't care about tone, okay. I traded it in for a limited edition white 40CR and love it – definitely not for "quiet" practicing though.

  • I bought a used DSL20CR 2 or 3 years ago strictly for learning new songs and practicing those songs for playing in my band. My other amps are "big" vintage tube amps and are way too loud for this purpose. For me, the DSL20CR is perfect for this. You can get a surprisingly great tone at a reasonable volume level. A "reasonable" volume level means different things to different people though.

As a side note: The DSL20CR developed a persistent problem last year that sounded similar to the instrument cord shorting out with an accompanying loud hum. I took the amp to my amp tech who services my other amps to get it repaired. Now my amp tech services vintage tube amps almost exclusively and he was willing to work on the DSL20CR as a favor to me. A couple days later, he called me and said that on the inside the amp looks more like a laptop than an amplifier and it's going to be a real chore trying to diagnose the problem. Eventually he narrowed down to the problem to being in the small auxiliary PCB that controls the effects loop, reverb and power-switching capability. He said he could make the amp work again by bypassing that PCB, but the amp would no longer have these features. I gave him the go ahead since I never use those features. When I got the amp back, it sounded even better than when I first got it, albeit noticeably quieter overall. The "Classic" channel sounded a lot better…vaguely similar to a "Plexi" and the "High Gain" channel wasn't as high gain as it used to be but sounded much more organic similar to a JCM800. No problems since!

  • I have the DSL40C and it was unusable at bedroom levels until I added a volume pedal in the effects loop. This tames things nicely.

  • I got one of these used as a replacement for an Artist tweedtone 20R after I had to spend 3 mo and go through 2 of them as both had assembly problems and both had to be returned.
Yr observations are on point. it is much better at full power than half, i'm looking into an attenuator to manage the volume while driving it properly and i just found a smokin deal on a new celestion cream back to swap into it soon, the 70/80 is ok but just that.
Super bummed on the Artist as I found them on this channel looked for one for a year used and ended up buying a new one when i did. I was super stoked with them when they worked, but despite the solid attempt by Artist to help,….when your factory is producing a bad run of product…yer kinda screwed.

I'd love to find a good tweed amp again some day but for now this amp and an OG spark 40 with cab cover all the modeler and tube amp needs….

  • Hi Shane, I would mention that for bedroom use it’s very useful to get an amp with an effects loop (which the DSL has), since it gives an easy and relatively cheap way to give the amp essentially a master volume with something like a JHS Little amp black box, doesn’t even need power, absolute game changer. I use it with my EVH 40 watt tube amp and a DSL head and works great in an apartment setting for practice and jamming, great video as always cheers

  • Yes it's a great sounding amp and great for practice but not sure it's got enough power for gigging. At least I felt the one I tried didn't have enough balls.

  • Had a Marshall 20w head and even at 10w needed plenty of volume even to get an edge of break up clean. My situation is ok but definitely too loud for a share house or apartment! Did love it though easy to get a good sound.

  • I can play medium loud since I have a detached home. If I was in an apartment or when people are sleeping, I’d hook my DSL1 head into the internal speaker

  • I would like to see a comparison of the DSL5 and the MG30/50. I had a Reverb 12 growing up and I’ve always liked that tone, although it was pretty low gain.

  • You can gig in a small venue with 10W of power, what is Marshall thinking of? Practice amp is at most 2W of power in my u derstanding
