I don’t know, but the 30th anniversary comes with a cream bag so the med is gonna be even more
Hmm maybe i like boxy tones. I played mostly twins as a pedal platform or a fender 75 with just a chorus till my amp flipped n broke its face n i ended up with a polytone n just kept using it for years
Quit showing off and get to the point already. Nobody wants to hear your crsp noodling
Cooll looking tele. Which one ist it?
I like it.
Thanks for the tip. I am picking up a used Blues Junior III tomorrow and I will try this out.
My iv is excessively shrill
like typical Americans youtube videos.. video topic starts at 6:00
TD;LR please?
The biggest improvement I made with my Blues Jr, 1V was selling it.
The old saying for fenders were 6 across the tone control. Newer fenders are similar with 6 treble 3mids 2 bass (6 3×2). I usually start from there and tweek the bass to taste. Makes no sense but seems to work great.
Don't forget these eq sections are passive so once used under 50% they tend to sound dull as they send more signal to ground.
I have a Blues Jr 3 with the black tolex and removed the stock Fender Special Design speaker with a Celestion G12 Vintage 30. The results were great, with an articulate mid range, smooth clean treble, less boom on your bass and added headroom. It’s only $150, but well worth it. Your top music supply companies should have them on sell periodically too. You will be well pleased and no need to buy another amp. Your amp will also cut through in a band gig in relatively smaller rooms and good for your the daily practice at home too.
Just got a second hand bj 3 and was a bit let down by the barkey sound when strumming, this tip made big diff and i am very happy with the sounds i get with the mids dropped to 0-3. Many many thanks!
The Blues Jr is probably the most confusing when it comes to knob labeling. Simply: *Volume is GAIN. Master is VOLUME.* Why couldn't they just label them GAIN for GAIN and "VOLUME" instead of "Master"??? Almost everyone uses them incorrectly because of the mislabeling. As a side note/tip/suggestion… It's been awhile since I swapped tubes in my Blues Jr Tweed, but I swapped in 12AY7 tubes in the first preamp position (V1 usually) in place of the 12AX7 to provide more clean overhead.
I've had a blues jnr for several years, only use from 1 – 3 pedals, but always use Les Luis Tweed Love Pedal, takes the quality and creaminess of the amp up a whole notch, highly recommend.
I actually did the same thing at one point. I sat it next to my Deluxe Reverb and tried to get the sound as close as possible. Since the DR has no mid knob I cut Jr and arrived at the same conclusion as you. It's not a DR but it sounds a lot better that way.
My main go to, reliable no hassle or issues on a gig amp, is the Blues Jr. III. I have played all except the IV. Mine is the LE with the Eminence Red Coat and I get many compliments on my sound and tone, almost on every gig on it. So don't worry about what people say. Like Jack listen with your ears, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised too.
I put a neo cream back in mine and alway use the fat switch No complaints just great sound
Why don’t guitarists play humbuckers more often, it’s alway split coils or single coil
TL;DR
I see mostly clean settings on the amp although he doesn't always show the pre-volume. I use the on-amp boost sometimes and sometimes it's a bit much and I don't. I also have a Tube Screamer and a Boss Blues Driver, each different from the other. You can set each for a mild boost up to a strong overdrive although with some accompanying noise. I'd never use the high bass that he does but to each his own.
I'm REALLY appreciating your videos on the Blues Jr. I've been really struggling with it since I bought it. Sounded pretty good in the store but I think it was more that I really like how it moves air around. It "feels" good. But I couldn't figure out how to dial in the appropriate sound I was looking for. These have really helped me. Thanks!
Honestly. True story. Today I was about to sell my one year old tweed blues junior. Fed up sounding so harsh. On solos fine but rhythm ????. Saw this. Went to room. Put mids to 1 and was like “oh. Right. That’s it! “. Thanks man
I have a BJ 3 also. Mine is the silver noir. I agree with you about scooping the mids. An easy and cheap mod I did was to change/ upgrade the preamp 12AX7 tubes. I bought a few and experimented. It gave the amp a more crisp articulate sound. Some may say it is not appreciable but I find it is.
My 2 cents
I use a Fender Tele w/ DS Quarter Pound's into my BJiii. I keep the Vol/Treble/Mids/Bass all at 7, Reverb at 3 and Master to suit the room. The only change I've made to the amp is to put JJ tubes in it.
One of these days Fender will make a Blues Jr. with a FX loop. I hope !
You did get a great sound from that amp. Better late than never.
I like the boxy sound of small amps. Especially the Pro Jr IV. The amp that I want to buy isn't made anymore. It is a Joyo JTA 05 Sweet Baby. It is just 5 watts of all tube sound with one volume control and two inputs. Nothing else.
What I probably will get someday is a Roland Blues Cube Hot. No tubes. Light weight. They supposedly react just like tube amps. The power can be switched to less than one watt for quiet playing. They were regularly compared to the Blues Junior and many people prefer it to the Fender amp.
My Blues Jr is modded with a cooled down bias, and the “filter caps” thing, and it sounds pretty dang good. And I play amplified Harmonica. And. when I put that Weber speaker where the Eminence speaker sits, it’ll be even bettaa.
To get a fat sound, I turn the bass way down to 2 or 3, mids at 4-ish, treble at 5-ish. I know that seems counterintuitive, but it works. For harp, anyhow.
LOVED IT. Adjusted a little w my Les Paul but yes, a keeper.
I have had mine set like you showed yours earlier in the video, mids cut, bass about 1 oclock and treble about noon for a long time, with the FAT switch on, always sounded better to me this way too, recently stuck a vintage 30 in there that I picked up on the cheap, this also tightened things up when turned up more
my first blues jr was the best sounding option paired with my particular guitar. and that never changed. dont get me wrong the 30watt matchless sounded better but at what cost? lol and its not all that much better. louder but not a way better tone. and after a speaker upgrade my blues jr became a permanent fixture.and that green 30watt matchless head with the 2 12 cab is in some studios collection..
Doesn't sound that good?
just got my blues junior…. thanks for the settings..
Great playing Man ????????????????????????????????????
I grew up ONLY playing Ibanez RG 550/570 by choice at 12 yrs. old because Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Robbin “King” Crosby, Warren De Martini, George Lynch, & (R.I.P.) EVH were my Guitar guys. Eric Clapton, Richie Blackmore, Eric Johnson, John Frisciante, David Gilmour, (R.I.P.) SRV, Jimi Hendrix, & Jeff Beck came in as an older teen around 17/18 yrs old and I wanted to buy a Strat for “Blues” rock sound. I played Peavey & Fender Champ 40/100 amps growing up. I’m 52 now and music choice still the same in blues Rock plus I got that Fender Strat “Blackie” and Fender Blues Jr. Amp I dreamed of and still play today! This amp does what I want and sounds EXACTLY like the sound I was looking for! I’m more than pleased with my set up and sound. When I get an urge to play some Ratt I get out my Ibanez RG.#Fender❤#????????????????#Stratocaster#Fender BluesJr.
How much does the pickup models and guitar knob settings have to do with the sound.
What every amp I have be a digital, transistor or tube, I start them all the same 9:00 or 12:00 and then I make the adjustments to match the guitar that I'm playing. Also to match the style of music that I'm playing. So yes I have done that to my blues Junior as well as my super reverb Deluxe, even my old TV musician III. I never really had any preconceived notions about what something should sound like, I just made it work. And I will owe that not to me being smart butt from going to a Yamaha school that they held at the Houston drum & keyboard back in the 80s. The person who was over it spent a lot of time on equalization and I actually left that demonstration not with the new guitar but with an EQ pedal. It was by Ibanez because Yamaha did not have one or at least the store did not have one. Our lady switch to the boss EQ and then finally the mxr. And I still believe EQ is everything. And for a while there I work with a guy who was a parametric equalizer freak and he got sounds that were very good. But not being a tone freak I just want the song to sound good. Basically if people like it dance to it, I'm happy. In 84 was the only time I cared, but then I noticed when we were playing live that I was now had a bunch of guys standing in front of me instead of girls and I said to hell with that. Play on for a bunch of dudes is not why I play guitar. For me and the girls
Your equipment YouTube’s are excellent. Particularly on the Fender Blues Junior amps. I’ve made
notes on all your recommendations your settings and this scooped set up I really love.
I just acquired a Gibson 339. I’mFinding the humbuckers as compared to are extremely too toney bright on the high e and B strings. This as opposed to my Tele single coils as my with primary and favorite guitar up to this point.
I would be happy to set up a session with you for some tone consulting
I’m all ears. Thanks Richard
Regardless of the given advice and fiddling with the EQ knobs: set the 'Master Volume' to "12". Then dial in the 'Volume' (i.e. gain) knob to achieve the desired decibels. It may have to be as low as "1.5" for practice volumes. Once you have tried this, anything else not using this technique sounds bland. Now move on to the EQ and adjust to taste.
