The SECRET to John Paul Jones’ Bass Sound! ???????? #johnpauljones #ledzeppelin #rambleon
John Paul Jones’ tone on Ramble On is pure magic—deep, warm, and vintage. ????
He played a ‘62 Jazz Bass with roundwounds, but the real secret? That massive Acoustic 360 amp with a dual 18” cab, giving it that signature dark, thumpy sound. Oh, and guess who else rocked the Acoustic 360? None other than Jaco Pastorius! ????????

There's absolutely no way he used roundwounds until at least the mid-70s. Love SBL videos but there is so much inaccuracy on the classics and it's so annoying! Do your research if you're going to put out a video man
I knew Jaco had used one of those acoustic amplifiers
I wonder if a LPF can help emulate the rolled off high end of that Acoustic Cab.
Jones said in the old Guitar Player issue from July 1977 that he used Rotosound flatwounds on his 62 Jazz bass.
The best rhythm section
YES YESSS SIR❕
Gotta love Led Zeppelin ????
i knew this!
Great bass tone
Did he play a fretless bass on Heartbreaker?
Was Jaco's acoustic 360 the one he called *Bass of Doom*?
As a long time bass player, I remember owning a number of Acoustic amps…combos and the legendary 371 fridge set-up. Such high quality amps…really popular with the late 60's, early to mid 70's players….very unique design and sound…
JPJ used a plectrum. If it's okay with him….
Neck pickup and tone almost off, there's your sound, but you'll never sound as JPJ.
My acoustic amp broke a short time ago. I got a good sound with a ten inch and an extra cabinet with two 15s.
john entwistle
I don't think that name drop at the end had the power he thought it did lol
Growing up, listening to Zep JPJ was the bottom that held the band together. Today i can only thing of one other bad player who commands the same… Flea
What happened to his relationship with Robert and Jimmy?
There was fretless bass on Zep II.
Let’s not forget Larry Graham !
He was the first person I remember using the A360 ..,
Definitely the unsung hero of Led Zeppelin.
His sound was really cool and really vintage? FFS!
The rare full-blooded nut mixed with Black or any Asian Englishman that looks good over the age of 70… My man John Paul Jones
Great line
I feel like his bass is mixed too low on all the remasters, at least on streaming services.
Jaco and Jean Paul might be my two favorite players
He is incredible. Period.
Holy s*** did I not expecting to hear the name Jaco pastorius associated in any way with John Paul jones…. Other then being on the obvious mentions on the ultimate greatest bass players of all time.
Is sort of disingenuous to call John Paul Jones just a bass player though he was an active multi-instrumentalist and there's no way Zeppelin would have sounded the way that it did without him
Zeppelin would have never lasted long without JPJ. He can play any instrument, and well. Great arranger.
If you know so much, why ain't you famous?
I need to hear top as a guitarist. Think JJ Burnell from the Stranglers. Love It!
Thank you for bringing up the Acoustic 360? Well, the 360 cabinet is wonderful. It’s a sub if you practice with that in the room with you you’ll go death because you can’t hear it? It’s just tearing yours ears out even though you can’t hear it.? The bomb goes off about 20 feet away from the stage right in the middle of the floor. That’s where it drops the base at? I highly recommend a custom tuck and roll with 3-15 loaded with Allen organ special low resonance frequency speakers! And a 600 or 800 Watt Acoustic slave to go with that 360 amp! Live you run all of it! At practice, you just run the 315?
Those are great amps… I have a 360 but it has a 6 x12 cab. I used it both for bass and 7 string guitar. Lots of bottom end.
I had an old 70’s acoustic combo 136…weighed a ton but did it sound killer. Flip the ‘bright’ switch to on and Jaco vibe a plenty!
Pour moi le plus grand des bassiste etait celui des. WHO j'en suis sûr……
J'ai oublié son nom….????????????????????????????????????????????????
Yeah, it's dark. He's filling the space. I'm a shitty engineer, but I've got an ear, and I know how sonic spaces are supposed to work. He's down in that pocket, not overloading the higher frequencies. Him and Pagey were the studio guys. It fits. Thanks.
Jaco was a soul in tension, most time. Conflicted and self medicated. Eclectic to a point and usually ready to party, he had a taste for opioids. Slap bass pathfinder, did a jazz gig for years. Kind of a big name band.
Innovative and appealing to other musicians, Jaco could wear out his welcome almost without a thought or insight.
An " in the moment " kind of guy.
JPJ. meastro
I thought it was flats for awhile but the 18”s make a lot of sense as the main factor for the darker tone.
