Honestly, I dont really hear much difference – like in some other comparison videos. I ca nhear some tiny differencies in playing but that is not about guitars.
I was expecting J45 and D35 give a more warm tone than the others but honestly my ears are not good enough.
Usually my ears give an audio image with Gibsons that the string tension is high and that Taylors lack the bottom end. But any of these is good enough for me.
Also I find that when the guitar is on your lap in a mid to big size room it sounds much better than from speakers. From speakers it sounds 2D while on your lap there is more dynamics, more live directionality, reaction.
Almost all instruments, especially strings of anysort seem to suffer from speakers. Horns too but they edfinitely need the right room volume. Pianos and epianos, organs are pretty much the same live and from speakers.
I have yet to learn to record the acoustic guitar the right way. I do the traditional 30 cm off from between the hole and the "12th" – and Im absolutely never satisfied. When you record close you need compression, the more the worse player you are – and Im not good. Im really inclined favoring recording the room rather than the instrument. Dunno.
I don’t know what the modern J-45 is like, but the one I bought new on discount in 1976 (the sunburst was out if style then), was the best sounding acoustic guitar I ever played. It was stolen in 1985. I had a decent Taylor and now own a Guild Jumbo that sounds very good, but I would always take that J-45 I had over anything.
You almost never see a used Martin for sale. Every Taylor is for sale, but they want ALL their money back. And the Gibson's are always in the shop for headstock repair.
