Yamaha THR5 | Long Term Review
Here we go again.
I’d love to show you my practice amp – Yamaha’s THR 5 guitar combo. I bought this amp a few years ago and I still use it often. Perfect amp for your practice room, living room or even your office. In my opinion the Yamaha THR5 or THR10 are worth every penny and a great addition to your amp collection. Great guitar tones at low volumes without disturbing your neighbors. But is it still worth it?

What is your favorite practice amp?
I really value the videos you've done about this amp, I was 99% sure I was going to buy it due it's small room applicability. But I decided on the Marshall DSL1cr, purely down to the nature of usability and tone. When testing at the shop the THR10ii felt like a toy, and although yes, there are many usable sounds, the build quality didn't impress me, and the fact you need an app to get more function out, it defeated the purpose for me to get away from phones/apps/updates/etc, and have a more screen-free hobby… Apps die, technology is too wrapped up in updates and tweaks, I don't like it. The Marshall is a tube amp, the tone was phenomenal, it was made by and for cavemen, it will still be relevant in 20 years, also it was CHEAPER than the THR! But still I acknowledge that THR has it's place, it ALMOST made the cut for me. Almost.
Thank you for this great review! I was wondering if I should save up for this and the video sealed the deal! Thank you once again.
Mine sounds small and buzzy. It doesn't take pedals well at all. I can't understand what the positive reviews are about. I've owned many amps over 30 years. This sounds like a cheap buzzy solid state amp of days past. The clean is pretty good.
Can I plug in my I pad, play backing tracks and of course play guitar over it?
If it’s a yes, does it still sound good?
I don't always listen to Black Sabbath…but when I do, so do my neighbors ????
Is it enough wattage for an apartment? How loud can it get?
Is this amp good for busking? Does it project well on the street?
Man if they put the battery and Bluetooth into the 5 it would be such a great amp. I cant quite stomache the cost of the thr10 wireless yet
thanx for the review, ijust got mine but cant get any sound out of it? going to contact the dealer
I have le Thr5, 10, 10C and 10x ! The 5 is juste smaller than the 10 and the equalisation is just a "tone" button. But it sound so good for a small amp, and you can plug a tube screamer on it to boost the 3 first amp mods. The tuner is one of the best because you see each note A,B E…. so good amps. The reverb is very good too maybe because of the stereo
Hello, Great video thanks for posting. My THR5 just arrived today, I’ve noticed if the volume, gain and master are around 9 o’clock there’s no sound. It seems to want to be turned up closer to noon to operate, is that normal? I thought I’d ask because I’m not finding any information online
Interesting video, thanks. I've had the THR 10C for a long time and use it a lot. If anything, I've grown to like it even more than when I bought it. It's very responsive to the tone controls, so it's worth twiddling to get the tone you want. For a clean tone, a secret is that the bass setting is great. The Bad Monkey and ProCo Rat pedals work well with it. I tried all three versions, but with hindsight should have given the standard version a chance with more tone control twiddling as I might have stayed with that. A small issue with the 10C colour is that the control labels are hard to read. I tried a few tube amps but struggled to get a decent tone at low volumes; the THR is designed for exactly this purpose. I also have a Cube 80GX which is also good with pedals. I wish the THR had an effects loop, so I'm considering a Katana 100 as that has an effects loop and is switchable down to 0.5W. That will be interesting to compare with the THR and Cube.
You're playing a thr10 I think the 5 is physically smaller then that. I've had them both…I wouldn't waste my time with the thr5 because it's simply not loud enough but the thr10 is. I personally think it's the best Amp I've ever played. It's hard too describe until you've played one. The tone is so warm and full…
Meine Amp zum Üben ist der Boss Kantana Mini. Da kann man eine Menge rausholen. Dave Simpson hat ein cooles Video dazu gemacht

The best practice amp I ever played! I bought one today! Great sound quality and very portable. It works with batteries too.
I am really thinking of buying this amp, I just want to ask, is suitable for quite home practice, cause I don't want to disturb the neighbours???? I bought a peavey vypyr vip1 20 watt and it is too loud even in minimum volume
I had one of these for a long time and then I got a new Fender GTX100 and I ended up giving mine to my Dad. They are awesome. Sound great, look great. One of the best practice amps out there.
Awesome Vid brother!????
My Blackstar Fly 3 is my favorite tiny practice amp. Cheers Marco!
It definitely sounds good. I'll still use my THR10X a good bit, but I always go through my daw . I use it as the usb audio interface.
They are good little amps. And some guitar players need stuff the misses doesnt mind lying round the house and this amp has a nice look. But if you want a truly small great sounding little amp my vote atm goes firmly to the NUX mighty air.
