Creating “Bass Hero” HX Stomp Presets | The Janek Gwizdala Podcast #337
Ever wanted to sound just like your bass heroes?
We all have those iconic players who shaped the way we hear and play bass. For me, it started with revisiting Voodoo by D’Angelo and getting lost in Pino Palladino’s buttery tone. That led me down the rabbit hole of dialing in his sound—and others—using the HX Stomp.
The result? A custom collection of 5 HX Stomp presets inspired by five of the greatest to ever do it: Marcus Miller, Pino Palladino, Tim Lefebvre, John Patitucci, and Victor Wooten. These players have shaped entire genres—and my own musical path—with tones that are instantly recognizable yet always evolving.
Rather than chase every tone they’ve ever played, I zeroed in on some of their most iconic recorded moments. These presets are my best attempt to capture those sounds—the ones that made me stop and rewind.

???? Are you tweeking the HX from the computer? USB or BT?
???? Definitely some great stuff! I started guitar at 14, then ended up winning a Les Paul at Ozzfest '98. I traded that Les Paul for a used ESP active bass and played that for about 20 years. Love the bass! But I have neglected bass for the last 7 years or so, picking up a used guitar the same year and specs as the Les Paul I traded 20 years prior and picked up an HX Stomp to avoid needing all the other gear that goes with guitar.
So I think I've only plugged my bass into the Stomp a handful of times and was not nearly as blown away as I am when I use the Les Paul (or my first guitar that I still own, a USA Peavey Predator). Seeing your results here has inspired me! I'll be plugging that 80s ESP in and trying to dial some things in (and maybe eventually just splurging and grabbing a preset pack to figure out what I've been screwing up).
To that end, for those of us that may not want to or be able to drop the $50-100, what would your number one tip be to have a successful HX Stomp bass preset?
These patches all sound great, but even more, I enjoyed your enthusiasm for the great players that inspire you!
Love your stuff. What drum groove is that? I'd like to add to my collection. Thanks!
????Always love the video's Janek, looking forward to getting myself an HX stomp soon and will be grabbing the presets soon after for sure!! I hope you and the family are doing well.
???? would like to see a preset of mononeon haha
That rkm sounds monsterous
sounds fantastic and the drum groove is awesome' – is there any chance of getting some drum patterns from your library? I could not see any offer on the webpage.
The video title would more appropriately be Demonstrating “Bass Hero” HX Stomp Presets. "Creating" made me think you were going to show us how you actually built some of your presets. I was looking forward to that but instead it's an infomercial. No disrespect. Just giving feedback.
Fun
Congratulations for 100.000 subs! ????
Will this work for the Hx Stomp Solo?
Every time you are inspiring me in everything playing Bass and better understanding hx stomp Xl creating sound thanks for Your inspiring work. ????????????
????
Beautiful p bass! ????
????I appreciate what you've done here. I purchased an HX Stomp not long ago, but I still feel like I'm stumbling in the dark trying to program and build sounds.
That P-Bass sounds amazing! What kind of tape wounds are you using on it?!? ????
25:06 Song "The Vision" I Agree . The HX preset sounds so Good.
Great Video. Looking forward to checking out the Bass Legend pack Soon!!
????
????????????????
???????? No question, just a thank you for the video! I had never heard Victor Wooten’s The Vision until this, what a beautiful song.
Great list, and I heard all of them in your examples! Marcus is soo much more than a thump and pluck MONSTER!!! He's a world-class first-call groove monster, soloist, composer, arranger, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who crosses over to multiple genres! The Victor Wooten song that really grabbed my ears was "Resolution" from his Yin-Yang recording. John Patitucci's and Anthony Jackson's prowess intimidated me for a loooong time and was the main reason I stayed away from the 6-string bass. However, the more I listened to John and his transition from the Ken Smith, which I questioned, to his Yamaha Signature bass, I came to understand why he switched! I started my 6-string journey about 7 years ago and finally settled on a Yamaha TRB6, the forerunner of John's JP1 and 2. Yup, listening is crucial to my musical growth, and I've listened to waaay more music than I'll ever play! By the way, I'm still intimidated by John and Anthony!!!
???? thanks for another great vid! any chance you can recommend a few studio/YT recordings of Tim Lefebvre? particularly using the ring mod, but all other recommendations will go into my listening homework for the next month!
Thank you for this video Janek, I've had an HX Stomp for a while now (thanks to you and IMA giving me major GAS with these videos using them lol) and I've been VERY slowly noodling around with it (still a bit intimidated to be honest) but some of these presets give me new ideas to try out. Thanks!
????hi thanks for this! was on your site for a different book and saw this pack on sale and was hoping there would be a video soon… exceeded what I could imagine in terms of inspiration. I did get to see you live with Vital Info in NYC last run and even say hi and take a pic – was really a true pleasure. My ????question is how would you approach creating on the HX Stomp; Michael Brecker EWI solo on Syzygy at 5:25, what do you hear with degrees of upper harmonies and tone-wise? Thanks!
????Great video as always. Never had an HX stomp, I’m afraid I’m an inveterate analogue guy, but interesting to hear your analysis of the tones of those great players and how to begin to reproduce them. It’ll just take a bit more space for me to achieve them ????.

Enjoyed this one and inspiring to try to get some usable presets on the Stomp and available at the touch of a foot switch. Thank you.????????
???? Ah man, that's my favorite Vic tune! So beautiful and that groove at the end is the best. Love it …. but more important question, what's the watch?
Man… You sounds like The Gwiz. Final point. ????
Of only I had a signature RKM 5 string bass ????????
I run a slapback delay on my synth patch too and it livens it up. It reminds me of an old game called Arkanoid which is my inspiration for a lot of my synth sounds.
