Marshall MG 100 HDFX a budget Amp that deserves more credit!

The Marshall MG 100 HDXF is a solid state amplifier that came out in the late 90’s and was not very popular and is not to this day. I want to show you, that you can actually use it cuz it sounds great, if you know how to dial it in.

I’m using different guitars but the amp settings remain the same during this video.
I’m playing through a Harley Benton 1×12 vintage 30 celestion cabinet.

  • The Valvestate in the Static-X studio footage is a second gen VS100. It was used for Wisconsin Death Trip at least. There's an interview with the producer on YT where he displays the amp and talks about why they used it. They're a bit brighter and less mids than a 8100 and use different clipping diodes.

  • Just got one for 80€ what a bargain for classic marshall sound ???????? I got a used Marshall 1936 lead 2×12 cab for €240 so a bargain half stack. Great review ????

  • Those HB SG's are great & this amp is very underrated. I don't understand the hate. It's far better then the vst & modelling amps & using the FDD button is that much better.

  • Ok I'm here to clear up some confusion. On the 1st 2 albums wayne used a marshall valvestate that belonged to Ulrich wild. Every album after that he used a combination of marshall amps including the mg 100hdfx as far as live ever since shadow zone he always used the mg100hdfx there's even a clip where he stated that he played every night live using it. If you really wanna hear the mg on record listen to cult of static and pighammer. Although during the cult of static tour he used a line 6 pod directly to the pa for simplicity. In short yes wayne did in fact use the mg for both live and studio sessions for MOST of his tenure. Hope this helps and thanks for the video.

  • First Full Stack I ever got, still got the broken head right here as a table lol. Love the tone it had and the effects, the reissued model didn't sound as good toe and had less knobs.

  • What do you have the amp dialed to specifically? Cause I'm having a bit of trouble getting a aggressive sound like you had in the intro

  • I have the standard 100DFX that is modified to be also used with another amp-head via a separate cable and also the speaker is not the stock one. It powers now a Celestion, I love this amp so much! ????????

  • Had one of these when I played in my old high school band. Absolutely hated it and I could never make it sound good. Still not a huge fan of how it sounds.

  • On my Marshall amps I use a guitar EQ pedal, pretty much set flat but with a slight bump in volume output. Its amazing how much this effects the sound of the amp. I sat this amp on top of my Marshall DSL40CR combo and plug it into the DSL40CRs speaker and ran it through the DSL cab, I was doing a comparison, I was shocked and surprised just how good the MG HDFX 100 sounded!

  • Yes finally someone saw the potential this thing had! I found one really cheap on marketplace and fell in love with it! then i found out Wayne also used it so now its my Nu metal and 80s shredder backup for gigs and home jams. Dont know why people bash it. Its very versatile for gigs and if you want to mess at home this head will get your sound. Honestly the best solid amp I have and its a keeper for me.

  • I have one and love it! I do have a question, what overdrive pedal do you suggest to put in front of it for metal tones?

  • These heads are so underrated its actually ridiculous. It goes from Plexi to JCM 800 to scooped metal. I think those that bash it never played one. It sounds better the the Katana head and most modelers. Its all in the Contour dial.

  • Shadow zone live onwards was a mg. Wisconsin and machine ect was the valvestate. Was on their forum back in the days and spoke with both guitarists.

  • Back in the late '00s you didn't want to mention Marshall MG in the Ultimate Guitar forums lol! They had an insane anti MG group think ????

  • These amps are massively underrated. The biggest problem they had on release was the speaker cabinets that came with them, the standard MG speakers installed in them were poor, but play through a good cabinet and these amps sound great. There is a huge range of different tones available. I have a 100 HDFX head, paired with a MG speaker cabinet that has had the MG speakers swapped out for vintage Celestion G12T-75's and this combination sounds huge. Although I've owned a lot of amps over the years and still have 2 tube amps and 3 solid state ones, it's the MG 100HDFX that gets the most use.
