Wow, I thought I was kind of a low-level intermediate player. But if these are skills that a level 1 intermediate guitarist should know, then I'm definitely nowhere close to where I thought I was!!

I think people’s glaze over when you talk to them about finding 3rds, 5ths, 6ths on the fretboard. Mine do. But talk about finding double stops on the e string and the G string in chord shapes, it becomes easier to think about. Find e:2 and G:2. Those are two notes in the D chord. They happen to outline a sixth. Why is it a sixth? It doesn’t matter why, but it’s a common shape in rock, blues, R&B, etc. Do slides with it as you describe in the video. People arent interested in the Theory. The word “interval” puts them to sleep, but tell them, “Put your fingers here and do this. It’s a very common lick that any decent guitarist should know how to use. Hear it in Van Morrison, While Night Is Falling”. THAT they wake up for.

Thanks so much for this lesson! I've been playing guitar on and off for a long time, self-taught, started before the internet was even around. These days, we’re lucky to have YouTube, but with that came the realization that my theory knowledge is lacking, and I’m still missing a lot when it comes to understanding the fretboard.

Gotta say, for all the explanations of 6ths (inverted thirds) I’ve watched, yours made not only the most sense, but you actually explained HOW they are used!
What you said about the I, iV, V chords hit home too. I working on my ear. This lesson made me realize that I tend to picture the one as the lowest chord, then ascending up to 4 and 5, when it can go very differently in real life. That’s one of the reasons I think I have such a hard time figuring out songs/chord changes. Light bulb on!
