Instant Aggression and Clarity for Heavy Bass Tones | Ibanez PD7 Phat Hed Overdrive | Deep Dive
There’s one pedal that I’ve been using almost religiously for the last 7 years and I feel like it’s a real sleeper when it comes to creating heavy bass tones. It’s a great tone shaper but weirdly everyone I’ve talked about it seems to love it for the awful distortion tones it produces.
I’m of course talking about the Boss Metal Zo- oh no, it’s actually the Ibanez PD7 Phat-Hed Overdrive 🙂

I appreciate the video but those drums are way too loud when it's the bass I'm hear (Ha!) for. ???????????? Cheers!????
Do you have a video on your Pork And Pickle? What settings do you use for this?
Hey dude! Love this video and actually stumbled upon it since I am considering to sell my Ibanez PD7, a pedal that I've loved for the past 20 years or so. I recently invested in a Darkglass – Microtubes B7K Ultra V2 and my question is if there is any idea to keep the PD7 as well? Never been a guy that used more than one pedal in a chain (except for the classic Boss TU-3). Mainly play Black Metal nowadays, but still love me some "grit & distortion" in the sound.
Any plans on doing that Dimarzio review?
I'm curious about the pick you use. Material, gauge and shape? Also, what kind of strings do you prefer? I'm sorry if you have addressed these things earlier. Great videos, man! Keep them coming!????????????????????????????????
have you gone down the RAT HOLE ?
I love this pedal. I used to use it on guitar as a boost.
Have you ever tried it after the distortion pedal on clean setting just to shape the tone?
We found this pedal somewhere in an equipment trash pile in the rehearsal room and this is the best pedal I have ever had the pleasure to play with.
I've had mine for 16 years. Still love it!
It's a Harmonic Booster, long before the Harmonic Booster came out.
(Phat Hed=Fat Head)
I had one of these a very long time ago. I have no idea what happened to it but now I want another one lol
Nowadays it's super rare to find and overpriced.
Can I use an EWS mid pedal to do the same thing and boost 3K? also what happens if I boost 3K on the infinity EQ ? does it have the same effect ?
I mean ive still got mine with original box and manual, i just don't ever use so im now considering time to sell
Do you feel that running all these pedals into the B7k preamp instead of after it helps your tone? I always run my preamp first in the chain
This sounds INCREDIBLE
What Country are you from?…..because, I wanted to congratulate you for speaking Awesome English!….you're amazing
Are there any other simple boost/clean preamp type pedals out there that really tighten the low end and have a 3k-ish boost? Hard to find a PD-7.
I was given a PD7 a couple of years ago and I haven’t really explored it given that I have DG stuff. Thanks for the video, man.
This one is the first bass pedals I bought….well over 20 years ago…so fucking annoyed I lost it ????????♂️????♂️????♂️
I was just going through a box of old stuff and found this pedal!
Cool trick! I do the same thing with my Source Audio Aftershock pedal. There are hidden "Voice" and "Voice Frequency" controls that allow me to boost or cut mids before the distortion circuit. They can be accessed through the app or bound to physical knobs (replacing "Clean" and "Tone" knobs which I almost never use). I accentuate high mids before distortion for definition, or low mids for "wooliness".
This pedal also has 4-band parametric EQ after distortion, noise gate, low cut, clean high cut (making it possible to mix in only the low end of clean signal), and the WHOLE SECOND CHANNEL (with separate pre- and post-EQ) for distortion stacking! I just wish that there was a version of this pedal where all of its awesome features would be accessible as physical controls, and not only though the app.
Have you ever tried a Rusty Box? Much of the sounds you get from PD7 and Pork&Pickle just screams "why not a rust box instead" to me 🙂
FFS – now I'll never get one for a good price.
Dude, your videos are criminally underrated and deserve so many more views! Great level of detail, excellent editing and production, and a dude you just want to go have a beer with – what's not to love?
I remember when these were out I just started playing bass haha. My first was a dod fx90 it was like 40 dollars. You should check out the damnation audio mbd3 it definitely has your name all over it.
I had one of these back in… oof… 2002 or 2003? My mum got it for me for Christmas I think. It worked for maybe a year or two, was obnoxiously noisy, then I got turned onto a Zoom multi FX unit and then the Boss OD, which has been my go-to. I guess the Ibanez Phat Hed took issue with that because when I went to plug it in the next time it was Phat… dead hahaha
Nice. I've had one for about 20 years. It's a killer pedal and I think way ahead of its time. But the attack switch is ass. Just, ass.
If you like the phat head you should try a JPTR mayo
Ibanez really really needs to re-release the entire Tone Lock series.
Where the heck did you get the Hed PE connection to the name? It has zero to do with the PD7. "Phat Hed" is just your typical late 90s, early 2000s edgelord spelling. It means "Fat Head". Just look at some of the DOD pedals from that era, you could easily find a bunch of edgy naming conventions during the era when nu metal still ran mainstream. Nothing to do with Hed PE (which stands for Higher Education Planet Earth/Planetary Evolution).
Finally your video! Long time from previous one 😀 Very informative as always! Thanks!
Great work! I barely can hear any difference. And your EQ section of video kinda approved it. Wouldn't having a parametric eq on your pedalboard would do the same + have more flexibility?
i got a steal on mine for 30 euro, came with the box and everything
I sincerely disagree that the clean circuit of this pedal is it's only usable setting, the distortion channel is one of my favorite tones of all time, it's the only bass distortion I've ever heard without a blend control that doesn't struggle with low end loss. Not sure about the association with Hed PE but I do know that Jo Bench from Bolt Thrower used one, I was never able to find out how though. Either way, I'm stoked to see this pedal get the recognition it deserves, and I would totally buy a new one if any builders out there decide to make a clone. Thanks for uploading such a sick demo! I've got 4 of them in my collection but two of them have those goofy switches you mentioned, the retracting knobs are fantastic for the diy shows I play but the jacks and switches aren't great
Thanks for officially answering those questions about this mysterious pedal. As I mentioned on your Instagram post, you made me buy one, and it's really good at shaping. It's almost like the DG Harmonic Booster but more specific in its kind. The form factor is quite annoying, though, but who cares for an always-on pedal?
Great video!
No idea where you find these pedals for 70 euros. When I got mine, couldn’t get them below 100-120 .. 🙁
Great video.
I always hated the distortion sounds, while others said they are good Darkglass alternatives. And I thought I took crazy pills! Glad someone competent and knows great sounds confirms im not! At least in that regard… ????
Keep up the great videos, man!
Really cool pedal! Finally someone who made it work (while many think they can run that hollow sounding distortion and have something cool going.)
Btw I can only recommend the Tritonlab Lazy Cat mk2. They are not easy to come by, you sometimes can find them on the used market tho. It's hands down my favorite Overdrive pedal for bass, no competition and nothing sounds quite like it! I bet you would like it too.
That pedal changed everything for me ????
Sick! Harmittaa kun laitoin oman 7-sarjan TS:n myyntiin alakerrasta vuosia sitten.
