Guitar Lesson: Intermediate – Expanding the Minor Pentatonic Scale by Nick Granville

If you like this lesson, feel free to support it by making a donation at my PayPal address nick@nickgranville.com

This free lesson discusses ways for an intermediate guitar player to expand their usage of the Minor Pentatonic scale. Many people are familiar with the first shape, but thats as far as they go. This lesson covers the 2,3,4 and 5th shapes, also known as positions, and using a vertical approach to increase knowledge of the scale and ultimately work toward knowing the scale across the entire fretboard. This is geared towards the improvising musician.

Visit www.nickgranville.com for a diagram of the scale shapes [positions]. Also, you can read my blog where I discuss the 4 t’s mentioned in this video – TONE, TIME, TASTE and TECHNIQUE.

  • The material here is good stuff, but I reckon the way you're presenting it these days is so much better. it's just more relaxed, and it helps that you seem to be enjoying it. ????. (No need to respond, Mate).

  • How about up one string then down the next! How about up one then down another key-up F then down Bb then up Eb and so on! Just some challenging ideas. Also combine 2 positions to create 3 note per string scales with repeated notes! Thanks for the post!

  • A great channel!!! Also for more advanced players! And finally someone who tells you that you won't get any better without practising. Great!

  • Just got hip your lessons, great stuff (we exchanged messages per your Sco piece).  I use a lot of the same concepts when teaching too.  The minor pentatonics are just so, er, major to everything (plus they're pretty easy to learn, thank God).  When students don't initially "hear" some of these things I back up and try simpler things first like, say, a G 6th arp over Am, then progress.  Thx, Nick!

  • Hi, Nick! Great lesson, and great playing. Subscribed to your channel already. Do you like Ibanez guitars? I´m contemplating an AR (220, 325 or 420). Would you say they are nice/good guitars? Thanks!! Greetings from Venezuela.
