Hey friends! New song lesson today for the much requested Night Moves by Bob Seger (1976). This song may seem deceivingly simple at the outset (just 3 chords for intro & verse) — but the rhythm, strumming, and F-chord nuance required makes it a bit trickier to pull off. But, fear not! I’ll walk you through it step by step. No matter your skill level, I’ll help you both play the F chord (using one of a few options), as well as master the tricky strumming required to capture Seger’s sound.
Here’s timestamps of what I cover in this lesson:
– 0:00 Overview & Lesson Summary
– 1:27 Chord Shapes Needed
– 2:54 Strumming, p1: Down-strums only
– 4:31 Strumming, p2: Adding transitional up-strums
– 6:45 Strumming, p3: Adding filler up-strums
– 7:38 Strumming, p4: Adding percussive slap-strums
– 9:04 Strumming, p5: Adding continuous up & down strums
– 11:21 Chorus Chords & Strumming
– 13:28 Final Tips & Farewell
RELATED LESSONS:
Here’s a few topics I cover in previous videos which will be incredibly helpful for mastering Night Moves. The first is the percussive strumming technique — which gives a driving back-beat on the 2 and 4 counts of each measure. This can help you, playing with just your acoustic guitar, imitate the sound of the snare drum in each measure. The other thing that may prove tricky is the F major chord… which I can help you with via my F Chord Cheat Sheet, showing you various ways to play it that don’t require the full six-string barre (which isn’t an ideal voicing to use in this song).

Thank you for your vids they really help and all I have to do is watch and learn a couple of times then I'll practice with guitar in hand while you teach
Did you say level up ?
Very helpful teacher.
Super cool! ✨????
Nobody breaks it down as well as you. Simplify and then progress through the skill level. Love it.
Bonjour,
Bravo pour ce tuto, qui est très bien expliqué.
La progression que vous nous présentée pour la rythmique de cette chanson, est très pédagogique.
cordialement
Yvon (Villieu Loyes Mollon – France)
Thanks for the lesson. I had given up on this song until I found your lesson. Best regards.
Love the song. Love this video. I know nothing about music/chords/notes, etc. But why is the capo needed, why on the first fret, and could said capo be placed anywhere?
Go O's!!
Guitar chords with lyrics
I appreciate your dedication to students of the guitar instrument, to help them to understand and learn songs, there's passion and dedication in the way you teach, thanks for this
Outstanding! Thank you.
the rest of the song?
It would be nice is if teachers just go thru the whole song chord changes.Thats all i need all this beginner stuff belongs on a beginner lesson. All this strumming and chord chart stuff lulled me to sleep…..boring.
Fine teacher and all but im looking for a different video
Lets get right to the song
Hey. I've been looking at this song from about 5 others teaching it. Your's is the very best as it breaks down starting with simple then gradually adds more better than anyone. The on screen graphics help a ton. This is great teaching. I'm now a subscriber.
You’re not consistent with the strumming
FFS….you never heard of editing? In a video there is no need to be repeating yourself over and over, that's what the replay is for. Not a fan as there are much better choices available.
He is the best teacher I have ever seen on YouTube and in person
Thanks!
This guy is a great help explains very well!!
Man , that sounds so good ????
Thanks , yeah I was not playing this right. Now I see what I was doing wrong, thanks again, I am now subscribed.
I agree…your a great teacher…the steps taken to get to the complete version are fantastic…thanks
Wow, probably the best lesson on youtube when it comes to teaching/learning strumming patterns.
Top Banana
Ok
Too much talking. People just don’t have the time anymore
F major seven
Bob Seger does not use a pick and finger strums in this song. Use a light .75 – .80 gauge pick if finger strumming is too difficult.
I can tell you are a man of dedication. Anyone that would be still wearing am Orioles shirt must be dedicated. You are definitely not a rainy day fan.
You don't often see strum patterns done out so well and in a learning progression.
Great lesson…..
David big fan of your lessons. I really like how you tier the strumming as we get more comfortable with the song. I’m surprised to see the wise ass comments, usually lesson comments are very positive. I guess social media is the safe haven of punks.
Can you please do a strumming pattern video on tequila sunrise by eagles
Really great lesson man ! So detailed and the progressions are awesome. Thanks again !
Great lesson
Great lesson David – a great song well delivered. Really appreciate the style you use of building up the summing style. Excellent ????
The Musicnotes PDF says 1 of 2 pages……but after I purchased and downloaded, I cannot see the 2nd page. Am I missing something?
Fantastic job on this, David, as always! Thanks so much for helping so many of us with this classic song.
Every beginning guitarist should find your site and YouTube channel because you are a great teacher. I am a gigging guitarist now but would have loved to have had instruction like this when I began. Keep up the great work!!!
wow, that was awesome. up to strum pattern 3 already ????
Really? Teaching people how to wimp out??
Love this over the top Great Great job your you rock Dude
Great lesson, what pick do you use?
Terrific lesson! Thank you!!!
How do you play the harmonic in the chord shuffle ?
Love what you showed, BUT why teach only part of the song. Need the "waiting on the the thunder part", and the quiet part that begins with "woke last night to the sound of thunder etc, and then the outro that has a B minor chord I believe.
Heyyy finally a good song again 🙂 happy to see more!
Hey Mr. Song notes could you do a tutorial for November Rain by Guns and Roses thanks a lot Sandra
