Get A Better Jazz Guitar Tone From This One Simple Adjustment | Quick Discussion on Picking & Tone

  • I've always played with fingers, mostly bossa nova, and I'm struggling finding someone who kindly teaches how to start playing the electric guitar with picking when you're not a begginer with guitar.
    Great video!

  • Pick selection definitely effects tone. Thin picks sound thin. Thick picks sound thick and meaty. Tone seems effected both by the thickness itself and how the thickness effects how the player holds and plays. I like a Fender Extra Heavy. They're hard to find nowadays, but they have a nice dark, warm tone. To me, the thicker the pick the less the pick flops around bending, and so the thicker the pick the more my hand controls the pick and sound more directly, forcing me to have good picking technique and control.
Also, the pick angle relative to the string effects the tone. Try experimenting with slightly different pick angles to see what happens.

  • What gauge string give the best tone and flat or round wound. I play with my fingers on a es175cc. I also continue to play nylon string classical. I don’t use a pick. I studied classical guitar for a year or two.

  • I use just fingers. I did a year of classical lessons. My brother strung my es175cc with flat wound nines. I would think I’d get a better tone with tens or 11s. I till play nylon string guitar
