Bartolini P Pickup Shootout – Just Bass It

In this video we’ll be comparing the 8S, 8SU, 8CBP, and B-Axis pickups by Bartolini using varying techniques. The basses used are both MTD kingston CRB’s with MTD Nickel strings. Special thanks to Bartolini, and to Dana B. Goods. I used a Radial Di box straight into my camera for recording.

  • Great video, confirm what I was thinking really like the 8S, with the second being the 8CBP
I could see one bass with one a second with the other

  • The B-axis sounds most like a regular p pickup. Must be the pole pieces. The other ones have blades.

  • I think the 8S pickups offer everything I’m looking for in tone. Can’t wait to try a set for myself!

  • I would like to know how you plugged your DI directly into your camera. I would like to do some covers and I have a DSLR and a go pro. If I can go straight into any of those cameras, that will save me the hassle of lining up videos with sound. Can you help?

  • first ones are very good. second ones suck. third and forth are good and ok. The player is quite good. This comparison helps me decide on a bass I'm considering. It has the 8CBP pickups. I appreciate and thank you!

  • they did sound different 8S and 8SU sounds best to me 8CBP sounded about the same b axis was more highs to me

  • Sounds to me like the 8SU and the B-Axis have a pretty scooped out midrange (8SU more so than the B-Axis). I'm a sucker for that big colorful P-Bass midrange, and to my ears, the 8CBP got the closest to that sound. Good demo, man!

  • The Bartolini website says the 8SU is supposed to be darker and deeper than the 8S but your video shows the complete opposite. I think either you mixed up the two or there was a mistake in the wiring. Based on your video the 8SU is thin and trebly compared to the 8S. Any thoughts?

  • 8S and 8CBP are really similar pickups. But the second one is less "closer" than the first with a stronger and present midrange and the same bass range compared to the 8S . The other tho pickups are too bright in sound and seem less "precision" than 8S and 8CBP.

  • This demo is just great, thank you! I'm thinking about getting the CBP. Anyone tried it with the roundwound steel strings?

  • I have a Fender P bass and was looking for a replacement pickup. This video was super helpful. I really like the sound of the B-Axis however guessing Bartolini no longer sells the P bass version. = (

  • Various iterations of S are useless .. the real good one is the first, the 8S .. mention of honour for the B-Axis decidedly aggressive and with a distinctive tone … I’d prefer to listen to samples with the tone rolled off as well

  • Great video! Maybe if the samples were smaller and with out fade in and out it would be better. Extremely informative and well planned out vid.

  • I had 8SU installed on my MIJ Presicion 57. Good PU, but I would prefer 8CBP if choose again (sounds more classical for me). Finally replaced it with vintage SD.
