Jazz Blues Comping – Drop2 Chords You Need To Know


This lesson is one chorus of simple jazz blues comping and then talk about a skeleton voicing + a few variations and some ideas for variations. I also discuss a few secret tricks that most people don’t think about with chords but that work really well to play more complicated phrases or embellish comping and chord solos

One of the most important types of voicings you want to have in your vocabulary if you want to play jazz, blues or R&B is the drop2 voicing. In this video I am going show you a simple way to apply Drop2 chords to a 12-bar Jazz Bues with just a few voicings and som variations that are easy to get into your playing.

Along the way I am also going to cover some some phrasing and rhythm ideas to really lay down the groove, and a few secret tricks that most people don’t think about with chords but that work really well to play more complicated phrases or embellish comping and chord solos

Drop2 chords are in many ways the go to voicing that you need when comping in a mainstream or hardbop jazz style.

  • For me, a lot of comping is realising that I have an entire horn section in my hands. I've picked up a lot of comping just listening to horn arrangements.

  • Great lesson. Always love to see the drop2 concepts taught and explained well, and accurately.

    I agree with a couple comments about future lessons being one like this on rhythm changes, or a bird blues. But what id really like to also see is a blues in drop2 voicings like this using the middle string set as well. Thanks again!

  • Drop this drop that in my view is BS can't you just say what you were playing in the base like seventh in the base 15 the base third is the best route in the base thank you

  • Excellent job. A lot of essential stuff here. Have you done anything like this with rhythm changes? I’d be interested not only in chord variations but also rhythmic ideas (I keep falling back onto the Charleston rhythm when I comp rhythm changes).

Drop 2 are by far the best and most pleasant chord voicings, for me at least, and really knowing them helps in a lot of different fields, fretboard overview being one of them. Not to mention that Wes is probably the most recognizable consumer of them, and following Wes’s example is never a bad thing :D. Thanks again Jens, keep on rockin’/jazzin’ 😉

  • It'd be cool to understand how you move from chord voicings to the underlying lines. I.e the relationship between voice leading and the single lines.

  • Fantastic lesson, Jens — and again, just what I'm working on now. Your comment about phrasing in a way similar to a sax — or any — big band section is right on; that's what I strive for in many instances. … Maybe something on patterns connecting half and wholly dim. chords? That's also something I'm working with, trying to make enough sense of it (with my basic theory) to know at a glance where it can be applied, rather than just by my ear telling me.

  • if the 1st chord is still to difficult(not everybody plays classical)than play instead of the Bb a F than we beget: G C D F (Bb COULD BE PLAYED ON 1st string so barre 6th position)this really almost never played, I imideatly recognice chords, if there are played often or just never…)THis chord is saying naturally: Wowowow!

  • it is great to practice this with Gm7b5 substutution for Eb79 to make it:(NR) G 10th Db11th F 10th Bb11th, because you make shure you keep the 4th finger and the 3rd finger staying while the 1st finger could go thanks to this to that nice db 6th on the 3rd string…also a chord what is seldom played is: F (7th-string 5 ) D 12th 4th string) Eb and G 7th position on respectively string 3 and 2…

  • Hi Jens I found a nice chord one guitar mainly due the my piano experience I wanna share it with every body: G10th Ctenth Db6th Bb11th at the last 8th of bar 4…so the melodie tone is respected…still I agree that it is difficult in the beginning…
