Open string Blues licks that you can move and play ANYWHERE on the fretboard – Guitar Lesson – ML115

In this week’s guitar lesson you’ll learn how to play a 1-4-5 Blues in the key of E with lots of open string licks. I’ll then show you how to transpose that composition and play it all in the key of F (closed position), so that you can play these licks in any key.

  • Awesome lesson, Brian! Definitely some light bulb moments – I learned some riffs a while ago using the F shape to B flat move, but only now do I know that it works like that because it is going from the I to the IV chord. Exciting stuff!

  • Something crazy happened with this lesson. I have been a bit frustrated with my progress lately, but I decided not to give up or take a break no matter what. Well, I just started this lesson and for some reason it opened up a whole new door to the blues for me all around the neck. I have been practicing scales, the cage system, songs and all kinds of things, but it never clicked. Something in this lesson did it for me and I feel like I went up another level in less than an hour. Thanks!

  • You're right on the simplicity – once understood 🙂 My martial arts teacher always quotes his master who said, "I show you how and say 'Oh sure'. But you never come to it on your own."

  • Good lesson, but you're talking too much or talking to fast, I don't know, but it creates kind of a stress which is not necessary.

  • Hi Brian. There are lots of great guitar players on YouTube. But not many are great guitar players, great teachers and multimedia producers. You combine all three into a really valuable resource. I’m 76 but new to guitar and thanks to your lessons, this old dog is learning new tricks.

  • What a great blues lesson. Light bulb moment: baby F and Bb right next to each other. Wow. And now I have movable licks and I have a better understanding of call and response. Thanks so much.

  • Thank you for this lesson. You are a great teacher. I normally can learn the licks without too much trouble. However, I have trouble with their timing and how they should be counted so I can switch to the chord on the right beat. Would like you to consider covering how licks should be counted in future lessons. Thanks again.

  • I love all your videos, especially the play by yourself with no backing track type. I jus play at home for me, so its nice to learn something I can play by myself on the back porch! Great Job!

  • Brian – I listen to a lot of your videos while commuting and I am a member of your Active Melody site. My guitar playing is limited as I play a tenor guitar tuned DGBE. I don't get as much video focus time as I would like. You always ask for us to share our 'light bulb' moments. In this video you said something that made a break-thru for me. The response is a shuffle on the E and A strings. I try to shift it to the D and G strings but the stretch is too much. You say, "If you can't do this, do this…" You play the E and A CHORDS!!! DGBE=2100 for E and DGBE=2220 for A. Thanks.
